Upon hearing the news that Jason Kidd has spurned the Dallas Mavericks in order to sign with Tyson Chandler, Amar'e Stoudemire, Carmelo Anthony and the Knicks, I believe a conversation similar to this one might be happening right now:
Mavericks Front Office Guy: "No, seriously, Ramon is our guy. We wanted him the whole time".
Ramon Sessions Agent: "Umm, no you didn't. You wanted Deron Williams, then Steve Nash, then Jeremy Lin, then Jason Kidd as far as we can tell".
Mavericks Front Office Guy: "You're right, we just desperately need somebody right now though. In a bad way. Cuban's super pissed and threatening to play PG himself next year if we can't work something out with you. Please be fair though".
Ramon Sessions Agent: "Well we walked away from $4.55 million next year to play in LA with Kobe, so..."
Mavericks Front Office Guy: [Facepalm] "How much, bro?"
Ramon Sessions Agent: [Writes large number on bar napkin] [Snickers] [Adds another comma] [Snickers again] [Slides bar napkin over to Mavericks Front Office Guy] "This much". [Laughs hysterically]
Ramon Sessions: "I'm going to go there, to Dallas, and take all Cuban's money"
Outside of just re-signing and handing Delonte West the Point Guard duties next season, which I do actually think might be a better option for Dallas than whatever it is they end up doing, I'm not sure there's many moves besides Ramon Sessions at this point. Dallas is in a bad place. For as crazy as it seemed for a guy like Ramon Sessions to opt out of a deal that paid him over $4.5 millioin next season to be the Lakers Point Guard, it's going to probably end up being a stroke of genius. The Mavericks are going to have to open their wallets here, and the hit could be way bigger than anybody expected two months ago.
According to an ESPN.com report, Sessions wants long-term security and a starting deal:
The Dallas Mavericks, in the aftermath of Thursday's stunning departure of point guard Jason Kidd, have reached out for a second time to Ramon Sessions, this time with a starting job to pitch. A source close to the situation said the Mavs initially contacted Sessions' representatives prior to Kidd opting to pass on a three-year, $9 million offer from Dallas and instead agreeing to a similar deal to join the New York Knicks.
After Kidd reached his decision to move on, the Mavs again reached out to Sessions, the 26-year-old point guard that was traded from Cleveland to the Lakers at the trade deadline last season. Sessions, the source said, is seeking a starting job and security. The source said another round of talks with the Mavs are set for Friday.
He's going to get that job and security too, probably in Dallas. There's nobody else left as far as I can tell.
