Hockey Fights of the Week: 3/18 – 3/24

The 2013 regular season is winding down. With just a few weeks left before we can close the book on the regular campaign and switch over to the playoffs, teams are scrambling to position themselves in one of 16 playoff spots. As you might expect, teams are fighting for their lives and playing with added intensity and emotion.

What does this mean for Hockey Fights of the Week? Plenty. When emotions and desperation run high, fights become a regular occurrence. When the gloves hit the ice between two teams that are struggling to stay relevant in their hunt for the playoffs, the fights benefit.

5. Jordin Tootoo (DET) vs. Matt Beleskey (ANA) – March 24

It wouldn't be a Hockey Fights of the Week column without mentioning Tootoo or Colton Orr (spoiler alert: Orr will be mentioned in this article). Tootoo now has eight major penalties on the year while his opponent, Beleskey, has six.

We might give Beleskey an edge in this scrap, but it was a nice battle between two NHL tough guys.

4. Tommy Wingels (SJ) vs. Torrey Mitchell (MIN) – March 23

Wingels doesn't drop his mitts very often, but when he does, he's typically been on the losing side of the fight card. Credit Wingels for his bravery, but here he ends up receiving numerous punches from Mitchell.

One added bonus of a fight between two players who wear visors: lots of uppercuts.

3. Frazer McLaren (TOR) vs. John Scott (BUF) – March 21

This McLaren-Scott battle was sort of an odd one. There was a lengthy discussion between numerous players during a stoppage in play, then McLaren and Scott dropped the gloves at the same time as Colton Orr and Patrick Kaleta. The broadcast had a bit of a tough time finding a proper angle for the McLaren-Scott tussle, but from what we were able to see, Scott landed some bombs.

2. Shawn Thornton (BOS) vs. Colton Orr (TOR) – March 23

See? We told you Orr would play a role in this column. While we didn't highlight his scrap with Patrick Kaleta, this one with Thornton will have to suffice. Orr and Thornton have quite the history. Their fight above marks the fifth time the two have squared off. We give Orr the victory in this one, but we think it's safe to assume Thornton will have a chance to redeem himself in the near future.

1. Steve Oleksy (WSH) vs. James Wright (WPG) – March 21

The only clear winner in this fight was the fans. Olesky and Wright showed some respect by removing their lids before engaging in one of the most balanced fights we've featured in this column.
