Colorado Avalanche win NHL Draft lottery, will have first overall pick

Written by Jeffrey Kleiman on .

On Monday evening, the fourteen teams who did not qualify for the NHL playoffs were placed in a lottery to determine the draft order in the 2013 NHL Draft. While the Edmonton Oilers have won the lottery each of the last three years, it was the Colorado Avalanche who won it this year, meaning they will have the first overall selection in the upcoming draft. The Florida Panthers, who had the worst record in the league and had the best odds to pick first, will pick second. From three to fourteen, the draft order matched the order that the teams finished in during the regular season.

Written by David Rogers on .

Ilya Bryzgalov has had it with the media in Philadelphia. As the Flyers cleaned out their lockers following a disappointing season that ended with the team outside of the playoff picture, local media questioned Bryzgalov about being the man blamed for the poor season.

Bryzgalov curtly responded by asking reporters, "What have you done for the city?"

Written by David Rogers on .

Welcome to our final regular season installment of Hockey Fights of the Week. We'll have a "Best Fights of 2013" post coming in the near future, but this is our final regular column about the best fights in hockey now that the regular season has concluded.

Did the final week of the regular season end with a bang? You better believe it. We saw some of the best fights of the season during the final few games on the schedule. This was one of the most difficult weeks to rank as numerous players left us with memorable fights before their year came to an end.

The Columbus Blue Jackets have plenty to celebrate despite missing the playoffs

Written by David Rogers on .

The Columbus Blue Jackets fell just short of a spot in the 2013 NHL playoffs. How close were they? As close as you can be without actually clinching a spot. The Blue Jackets ended the year with a 24-17-7 record and 55 points, matching the Minnesota Wild's total. Minnesota held the tiebreaker by having a larger number of wins in regulation and overtime, giving them the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

While there's bound to be disappointment in Columbus, fans should celebrate over the miraculous comeback the Blue Jackets had after a disastrous start to the season. More importantly, the team is in a much better spot now than they were a year or two ago, which should have fans optimistic for 2013-14.

Don Cherry "doesn't believe" women should be in male locker rooms

Written by Laura Astorian on .

God love Don Cherry. You can think what you want about his taste in clothing, or his opinions on Europeans, or good ol' Ontario boys, but you have to admit that you would love to spend one day having his total lack of a filter. He just says whatever he wants to, Ron MacLean sits and grimaces, and then the second period of that evening's Hockey Night In Canada game starts.

I, for one, would love to go about saying whatever I want while being labeled a national treasure.

Ex-Leafs general manager Brian Burke sues internet commenters

Written by Jeffrey Kleiman on .

This should serve as a notice to those who think they can post whatever they want on the Internet without fear of retribution.

On Friday, a report came out that ex-Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke has filed a lawsuit with the British Columbia Supreme Court alleging defamation over various internet outlets. The internet posters claim that Burke, a current part-time scout with the Anaheim Ducks, had cheated on his wife with Hazel Mae, a reporter for Sportsnet and fathered her child. The lawsuit doesn’t name the internet posters by their first and last names, but instead referred to those allegedly responsible by their online handles/nicknames.

Ryan Miller is selling his condo, potentially signaling his exit from Buffalo

Written by David Rogers on .

Here at PDL we rarely stray into the world of personal rumors and gossip. We thoroughly enjoy breaking down hockey trade rumors when they seem credible, but when it comes to crossing into the pop culture and TMZ side of the sport, we try to keep our distance.

However, this story about Buffalo goaltender Ryan Miller putting his condo up for sale was a bit too juicy to pass up. Miller has reportedly listed his Buffalo townhouse for sale amidst persistent rumors that say his time with the Buffalo Sabres is coming to an end.

Miller might just be looking for a new residence or he might just be looking to capitalize on his current property's value before he purchases a new one. He may be looking to find a new residence that allows him to pack up and move quickly if a trade suddenly develops. However, it's impossible to ignore the fact that when you combine the story about him selling the property he bought in 2006 with reports that claim his "days are numbered" in Buffalo it suddenly looks like all the puzzle pieces are fitting together and pointing to a trade in the near future.

Minnesota's Josh Harding is the clear favorite for the Masterton Trophy

Written by David Rogers on .

Nominations for the Masterton Trophy are still pouring in from around the NHL. Despite the fact we aren't even sure which men will be on the final ballot, there's already a clear favorite for this year's trophy. We wish a big "good luck" to this year's nominees as Minnesota's Josh Harding is the clear favorite to take home some hardware.

The Masterton is awarded to the player that exhibits "to a high degree the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey". If you're familiar with Harding's story, you're aware that the previous sentence sounds like a perfect description for the Minnesota goaltender.

Harding was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in the fall of 2012. The disease affects the brain and spinal cord and impacts the central nervous system. Prior to his diagnosis, Harding was feeling dizzy and started seeing black dots during a workout. These symptoms are common in those suffering with multiple sclerosis, along with disorientation, muscle spasms and weakness.

Chicago Blackhawks win the Presidents' Trophy

Written by David Rogers on .

The Chicago Blackhawks are the official winners of the 2013 Presidents' Trophy, edging out the Pittsburgh Penguins for the top spot in the NHL. With their win over the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday night, the Blackhawks earned the title for best team in the regular season for the first time since 1990-91.

With two games left on the schedule, the Blackhawks already have 75 points and could end the 2013 season with as many as 79 points. Chicago winning the trophy for the best team during the regular season is rather appropriate considering the team started the year by stringing together 24 consecutive games where they earned at least a point. Chicago's streak also included an extremely impressive 11-game winning streak.

Erik Karlsson miraculously ready to return after suffering a sliced Achilles tendon

Written by David Rogers on .

When Matt Cooke's skate cut through Erik Karlsson's Achilles tendon back in February, hockey fans and writers universally assumed that it meant the end to the defenseman's 2013 season. Shockingly, Karlsson has not only returned to practicing with his team, but he is reportedly ready to return as soon as Thursday when the Senators battle the Washington Capitals.

Karlsson's status against the Capitals is yet to be determined (He says he has a "slim chance"), but the fact we're even talking about the defenseman playing in a game this season is pretty remarkable.
