Eric Staal to miss 3 months with severely sprained knee

Written by Jeffrey Kleiman on .

The IIHF World Championship is a major tournament that takes place during the spring, yet is eclipsed here in North America due to the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Many players who either fail to qualify for the playoffs or get eliminated in the first round make their way onto their respective national rosters for a chance to win international gold. During a quarterfinal match on Thursday between Canada and Sweden, a scary hit took place between Eric Staal of the Carolina Hurricanes and Alexander Edler of the Vancouver Canucks.

Pittsburgh created a goal light out of a 44-story building

Written by David Rogers on .

Whenever the Pittsburgh Penguins score a goal in the playoffs the 44-story Gulf Tower in downtown Pittsburgh will transform into a massive goal light. That's right, the idea that's been talked about for ages in a variety of cities has finally taken hold. As seen in the short video below, a rotating red light illuminates the top of the building, mimicking a goal lamp.

Pittsburgh Penguins on WhoSay

Normally the lights on the top of the building serve as a fancy, yet awesome way to see exactly what's going on with the weather. However, this isn't the first time the building's lights have been connected to sports as the lights have been flashed when the Pittsburgh Pirates hit a home run

This entire concept is awesome. Well played Pittsburgh.

Capitals and Rangers continue to argue despite the fact their series is over

Written by David Rogers on .

It's rare that a playoff series gets more intense after the series has been completed and one team has advanced to the next round. Such has been the case between the New York Rangers and the Washington Capitals, two teams which battled in the first round and continue to argue despite New York moving on and Washington hitting the golf course. New York emerged victorious after seven games, but that fact hasn't prevented the two sides from exchanging some heated comments through various media interviews.

Earlier this week, Rangers coach John Tortorella revealed that he believed the Washington Capitals were whining and that this mindset might have cost them the series. As you might expect, the Washington Capitals weren't very pleased with these comments. Washington coach Adam Oates responded and his comments only added more fuel to the fire.

A flawed survey ranks all 30 NHL arenas

Written by David Rogers on .

Be warned: This is a controversial topic and a controversial article. The topic of "Which stadium is the best to watch NHL hockey" is one that's usually met with fire and anger. Should you rank an arena unfairly in the eye of the reader you best be prepared to be labeled a moron. Should you create an article that ranks stadiums and fail to provide any supporting evidence you should also be prepared to be labeled a moron.

With that being said, the site Stadium Journey surveyed the 30 NHL arenas and named their best spots to catch a game. The results will probably surprise you and potentially offend you due to the lunacy of some of these rankings.

John Tortorella thinks the Washington Capitals are whining

Written by David Rogers on .

We've already discussed Alex Ovechkin's comments after the Washington Capitals departed from the playoffs in the first round. In our article, we highlighted that Ovechkin and his teammates would be better off not making excuses and should instead take responsibility for their actions.

As it turns out, New York Rangers coach John Tortorella wasn't a fan of Washington's comments either. In an article seen in the New York Daily News, Tortorella accused the Capitals of whining and he believes that's one of the reasons why they lost the series.

What was that moaning sound during Game 1 between Chicago and Detroit?

Written by David Rogers on .

If you watched Game 1 between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Detroit Red Wings, you might have caught a rather strange noise that was broadcasted during the second period. As the network prepared to head to a commercial break, there was a loud moaning/grunting sound following Doc Emrick's comments.

What was it? No one knows, but there are plenty of fun theories and most involve Pierre McGuire. Realistically, it was probably one of the broadcasters trying to clear his throat, but the timing and sound of the noise still have us wondering what was really going on in that broadcast booth.

Alex Ovechkin's exit comments raise plenty of questions

Written by Laura Astorian on .

Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin had some very interesting parting words before he joined the Russian national team at the World Championships. A disappointing Game 7 loss should irritate Ovechkin, but it's not exactly something he's not familiar with. His team tends to exit in seven games quite often, giving fans high hopes then breaking their hearts.

Teemu Selanne contemplating his future in the NHL

Written by David Rogers on .

Have we seen the last of Teemu Selanne in the NHL? As soon as the Anaheim Ducks were booted from the playoffs by the Detroit Red Wings, fans were immediately wondering if Selanne would be returning to play hockey for another year or if he'd call it a career and hang up his skates.

During the team's exit interviews on Tuesday, Selanne's future was a hot topic. When questioned about retirement, Selanne stated that he was going to take time to contemplate his future, as reported by the LA Times. In the past, Anaheim has allowed Selanne to determine his future and it's believed that will again be the case this summer.

Don Cherry thinks the Senators are a bit feminine

Written by David Rogers on .

That didn't take long. The second round just got underway and Don Cherry already said something that angered fans, specifically those supporting the Ottawa Senators. What did he say this time? He ripped on the Ottawa Senators for a variety of things outside of their play on the ice, alluding to the fact that they have some feminine qualities.

Cherry slams Daniel Alfredsson for his hair and the fact he wears a barrette to keep his long locks out of his face. He also calls out a group of Senators for their lack of focus, claiming they're too busy talking about fashion while treating us all to a somewhat horrifying fake female voice.

Milan Lucic's handshake is a bit personal

Written by David Rogers on .

Milan Lucic did a lot of things really well in Boston's unbelievable Game 7 victory over Toronto. Lucic scored a goal, added an assist and had the best handshake we've seen so far in the 2013 playoffs. When it came to the handshake line after their OT victory, Lucic got a bit personal with Toronto captain Dion Phaneuf.
