Reggie Miller was born on this day in 1965 in Riverside, California. Born with a hip deformity, Miller wore leg braces until he was five years old. Once off, he began to star in school sports, most notably as a baseball player. Ultimately he turned to basketball in high school, and this is where he starred. He would stay in the LA area for college, playing at UCLA.
For the Bruins he scored 2,905 points, which is 3rd to Lew Alcindor and Jason Kapono in UCLA history. And Miller scored all these points despite playing only one season with the 3-point line (and he made 44% of his attempts). That year he led them to a PAC-10 regular season title, as well as the inaugural PAC-10 tournament title.
He was drafted 11th overall by the Indiana Pacers.
It's John Scheyer's birthday, born in 1987. Born and raised in Illinois, Scheyer completed his scholastic career by being named Illinois' Mr. Basketball, and was the 4th all time scorer in state history. His high school coach was Bruce Weber's brother, and Weber at the time was the Illinois head coach. This led many to believe he would stay home and join the Illini, but instead he chose Duke.
Scheyer started every game as a freshman, and then came off the bench behind Gerald Henderson as a sophomore. His junior season – in which he was named captain – he was asked by the staff to move from the 2-guard to the point, which turned out to be a roll he thrived in.
Everything gelled his senior year when he became 1st Team All-ACC, was on several 1st or 2nd Team All-American lists, and most importantly he led Duke to the National Title.
