This week in extreme polling: Ron Morris (The State, Columbia, SC)
This week's winner goes to Ron Morris of The State in Columbia, South Carolina. Mr. Morris is noted from an October incident when Steve Spurrier refused to hold a press conference if Ron Morris was in the room. So there's that.
This ballot comes from the excellent website Pollspeak.
3. North Carolina. Every voter has UNC in their top-10. Three voters have them at #3. Most notably, this conflicts with Ohio State. The Buckeyes have wins over Florida, Duke and Indiana. UNC has wins over Michigan State, Wisconsin and Texas. OSU lost to Kansas, Illinois and Indiana. UNC lost to UNLV, Kentucky and Florida State. In short, I disagree and would have Ohio State higher, but it's no big deal.
14. Mississippi State. 10 of 65 (15.4%) don't have the Bulldogs ranked at all. No one besides Morris has them better than 16th. For comparison's sake, let us compare them to a "random" team. Mississippi State has losses to Akron, Baylor, Arkansas, Mississippi and Florida. So two of those teams are ranked by Morris. Akron is a solid MAC team with losses to Duquesne and Valparaiso among others. And Arkansas and Mississippi are midling SEC teams. Against teams ranked in the top-100 by Ken Pomeroy, MSU is 5-5. Plus they have a loss to Mississippi (#110). Our random team has losses to Denver and Baylor. Against teams ranked in the top-100 by Ken Pomeroy, they are 6-2. And they have no bad losses. The random team is the St. Mary's Gaels and Ron Morris is the only voter in the AP not to include them in their top-25.
20. Murray State. 51% of the voters have Murray State in their top-10. No one besides Morris has them worse than 17th. Murray State is undefeated. They've played three teams ranked in the top-100 by Pomeroy and their signature win is Memphis. If you're expecting me to lash out at Mr. Morris for his vote, you're mistaken. I'm not sure they deserve to be 20th.
24. Long Beach State. 63 of 65 voters left Long Beach State off their ballot, and the lone other voter is John Feinstein, whom this award will likely be named after when he retires. The Beach have won 9 in a row. And zero of those nine came against top-100 teams. They've played 7 top-100 teams and won twice. And they lost to Montana. That's not a top-25 resume.
