1. 6-7 guard Montay Brandon had 14 points and a career high 11 rebounds. His previous career best was nine rebounds, established two games ago vs UCF. He's now averaging 6.8 rebounds per game, which is 2nd best on the team behind Okaro White (7.0), and while he's on the floor Brandon has grabbed 20% of available defensive rebounds. The last Seminole to rebound 20% of more of opponent misses over an entire season was Uche Echefu in 2007-08 (20.7%).
2. After struggling through his junior year with a bad foot, FSU elected to schedule Miller's surgery for before their opening round game in the NIT last March. It was a wise decision, though they lost the game. Had they won with Miller, another win or two could have set the surgery back two weeks. Instead, Miller was able to recover and be in shape for the team's summer trip to Greece. Now he's had a four game stretch to open the season where he's established new career highs for points three times. The most recent was Thursday vs VCU, where Miller opened his scoring with a 3-pointer off the bench after VCU had taken an 8-2 lead. He finished with 22 points and 7 rebounds. For the season his offensive rating is 138.1, which is No. 2 in the ACC (for players who use at least 20% of their team's possessions) behind Duke's Rodney Hood.
3. FSU turned the ball over 25 times and still won easily. They've now turned it over on 25.7% of their possessions, which is 344th out of 351 Division I teams. They've made up for this by being one of the best shooting teams in the country. Their eFG% (58.3%) is 22nd in the nation, and 2nd in the ACC.
4. VCU's star Treveon Graham scored 14 points, but on only 4-13 shooting. Of FSU's four opponents, none of their leading scorers have managed 50% shooting vs Florida State. Combined, those players have made 16-37 2s (43%), and 4-15 3s (27%).
5. FSU won 85-67, which makes it sound like an offensive explosion by FSU. In reality, this was a game played at a breakneck pace. This was an 84 possession game, and was the most uptempo game for FSU since Nov 14, 2010 (86 possessions). The high tempo also disguises the defensive dominance displayed by FSU. The Rams were held to 0.798 points per possession, which is the worst offensive performance in Shaka Smart's career, and the worst by VCU since Dec 4, 2005.
