January 29 Rebound

Here's the rebound of the action of January 29, headlined by Arizona and Syracuse pulling out big road wins and Ohio State and Wisconsin's troubles continued at home.

(1) Arizona 60 (21-0, 8-0) Stanford 57 (13-7, 4-4)

The Wildcats had a very off shooting night, 18 of 50, 36% overall, 18 of 29, 62% at the line, but were able to make shots when it mattered. Nick Johnson (16-5-4) Drilled a 3 with 49 seconds left for the game deciding basket. He scored Arizona's final 7. The Wildcat defense held the Cardinal to 4 points from the 12:34 to 1:21 mark of the second half. Even then, they had shots to tie. Josh Huestis, 13 points, 11 boards, missed a 3 with 13 seconds left before an Aaron Gordon miss kept the door open and Chasson Randle missed a 3 in the final seconds.

(2) Syracuse 67 (20-0, 7-0) Wake Forest 57 (14-7, 4-4)

The Orange got off to a very slow start with 11 points through the first 12 minutes. They turned it on from there and never trailed again, perpetually leading the game by 7. Tyler Ennis continued his great play with 18, 5 boards and 4 assists. DJ Fair had 16-8. Travis McKie and Devin Thomas both had 12 for Wake.

(6) Kansas 92 (16-4, 7-0) (16) Iowa State 81 (15-4, 3-4)

The Cyclones battled back from a couple of double digit holes. With 3:30 to go, Dustin Hogue was called for an intentional foul. Andrew Wiggins made a pair of free throws, tipped in a bucket on the ensuing possession and threw down a dunk off a Naadir Tharpe steal to put the game away. Wiggins had a career high 29 on 10 of 15 shooting, 4 of 6 from 3 and 5 of 6 from the line with 7 rebounds. Perry Ellis added 20 and 6. Joel Embiid had a 14-11 double double and Tharpe had a 12 point, 12 assist double double for KU. Georges Niang had 24, 5 assists, 4 boards and DeAndre Kane had 22 for Iowa State in the losing effort.

Northwestern 65 (11-11, 4-5) (14) Wisconsin 56 (17-4, 4-4)

The Badgers were just 15 of 57 from the field, 26.3%. They were 5 of 24 from 3. Northwestern hit 48% from the field on the back of a 30 point effort by Drew Crawford. Crawford hit 10 of 15 and 7 of 10 from the line. Sanjay Lumpkin had 12 assists and 10 rebounds for the Wildcats as well. Wisconsin has lost 4 of 5.

(19) St. Louis 77 (19-2, 6-0) Richmond 57 (14-7, 4-2)

The Billikens jumped up 6-0 and never looked back. They busted open a 21-7 lead halfway through the first half and went into the locker room up 21. The lead got as high as 26 in the second half. St. Louis shot 52% while holding Richmond to 31.7%. Jordair Jett had a 21 point, 10 rebound double double while Dwayne Evans added 15 and 10 boards of his own.

St Bonaventure 78 (13-8, 3-4) (21) Massachusetts 65 (17-3, 4-2)

UMass has dropped 2 of 3 after getting popped big time in the second half by the Bonnies. The Bonnies only hit 37% from the floor, but they got to the free throw line 34 times and made 30. UMass turned the ball over 14 times and went 8 of 15 at the stripe in the disappointing loss. 5 Bonnies scored in double digits, led by 14 form Charlon Kloof. Trey Davis had 18 for the Minutemen.

(22) Memphis 69 (16-4, 6-2) Central Florida 59 (9-9, 1-6)

This was a very competitive game on a very ugly court. The Knights gave Memphis all they could handle with a 56-54 Memphis lead at the under 8. A 10-4 run centered around 4 points by Geron Johnson (10-6 rebounds) and a Chris Crawford (12 pts) 3 gave Memphis enough of a cushion to pull out the victory. Joe Jackson continued his solid year with 17 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Isaiah Sykes did his best for UCF with a 24 point, 12 rebound, 5 assist effort. The Knights hit just 5 of 23 from long range.

Penn State 71 (11-10, 2-6) (24) Ohio State 70 (16-5, 3-5) – OT

Ohio State's struggles continued with a last second loss to DJ Newbill dropping a jumper with 1.9 seconds left in overtime. Newbill sent the game into 10 as PSU climbed back from a 10 point second half deficit. Newbill hit a 3 with 70 seconds left and another with 13 left to tie the score. He scored 4 of the 6 PSU overtime points, finishing with 25. The Buckeyes hit just 38% from the field as their offensive woes continue. LaQuinton Ross put up 16 on 4 of 10, 6 of 6 at the line, shooting.

Dez Wells (21 pts) hit a 3 with 8 seconds left for the win.

NC State 74 (14-7, 4-4) Florida State 70 (13-7, 4-4)

TJ Warren went off for 30, 7 boards and 3 steals for the Wolfpack

North Carolina 78 (13-7, 3-4) Georgia Tech 65 (11-10, 2-6)

Marcus Paige put up 19, 7 assists and 5 boards in the Tar Heel victory.

Boston College 76 (6-14, 2-5) Virginia Tech 52 (8-12, 1-7)

Arizona State 89 (16-5, 5-3) California 78 (14-7, 5-3) – OT

Jahii Carson found Jermaine Marshall (22) for a 3 ball with 19 seconds left to tie. A Justin Cobbs, 21 pts on 9 of 19, potential game winner missed. Carson hit a 3 in OT to give ASU the advantage and hit 8 free throws in the OT period for 11 total points to make sure they kept it. Arizona State is in the mix in the Pac 12 with this win.

The Vols shot the lights out. They hit 30 of 61, 49%, from the field. They went 11-20 from 3 and had 14 offensive rebounds. 4 Vols had double figures, led by Jordan McRae's 26. McRae hit 6 of 7 from 3. Marshall Henderson of Ole Miss had 26 on 9 of 22 shooting, 8 of 19 from 3.

Sam Dower attempted one three pointer in the game. It came with 2 seconds left to give the Bulldogs a 2 point win. Dower had 13, Gary Bell had a team high 15 for the Zags. Brandon Clark, 12 points, made a jumper with 28 seconds left to give Santa Clara their one point lead.
