The Nation takes on college hoops

Written by Michael Rogner on .

As a matter of policy I avoid browsing websites which make me angry. This means that I avoid just about all political sites, regardless of their philosophical leanings. But I'm also a reader. It's not that I like to read, it's that I'm a reader. There's a difference, and if you're a reader then you know what I mean.

One of the topics I'm always seeking is fresh takes on college basketball. Which is how I ended up printing something from The Nation and reading it on my back porch. And I'll admit, I was intrigued. This was one of my favorite topics, which is the professional nature of what we like to call amateur sports.

Report: No Pre Final Four NCAA Tournament Games in Domes (Yay)

Written by Steve Fetch on .

According to an ESPN report, the NCAA tournament will no longer feature games in domes before the Final Four. This is excellent news for college basketball and college basketball fans. While evidence does not back up the general complaint that domes cause poor shooting percentages, there's no doubt that the domes weaken the atmosphere of college basketball's biggest weekends.

Evaluating Donnavan Kirk to Miami

Written by Michael Rogner on .

Following Miami's ACC winning 2012-13 season, the team was pretty much decimated. Between graduating seniors and the loss of Shane Larkin to the NBA, the Canes lost 82% of their minutes. Now they're Rion Brown, Tone Jekiri, and a bunch of guys who have been given uniforms.

But the transfer market is always a source of new blood for teams like this, and sure enough Miami found some.

NC State and the Carolina Hurricanes battle over arena dates

Written by Michael Rogner on .

The Carolina Hurricanes, which apparently are a professional hockey team, and the NC State Wolfpack both use PNC Arena. The Wolfpack use the arena for basketball, and also use its parking lot for football games. This arrangement has been managed for 14 years, so it's a bit odd that the two are now fighting about it.

Somehow the Hurricanes, whose parent company manages the arena, negotiated for themselves rights which defer to NC State. The Wolfpack have first access to the arena. This didn't seem to be a problem when the lease was renegotiated several years ago. At the time, the Hurricanes GM said, "We value our strong partnership with the Centennial Authority and NC State University, ensuring that the RBC Center remains a first-class arena. The extension of our lease displays the confidence that we have in the growth of hockey in this market."

Does Scottie Wilbekin's suspension open door for Kasey Hill?

Written by Michael Rogner on .

Two players for Billy Donovan's Gators played more than 75% of the team's minutes last year: Kenny Boynton and Scottie Wilbekin. With Boynton gone, it was expected that Scottie Wilbekin would provide the senior leadership needed in a thin back court. But Wilbekin was just suspended, and it's not his first infraction. Last year, Wilbekin sat out the first two games while suspended.

For now, this is remaining in the "violation of team rules" catch-all category. It remains to be seen if any details will emerge, or if this is strictly an internal matter.

While this is certainly not the type of leadership you want out of an experienced senior, it does push the door further open for incoming 5* point guard Kasey Hill.

Evaluating Pe'Shon Howard to USC

Written by Michael Rogner on .

Andy Enfield is at it again. After turning around Florida Gulf Coast with a combination of the previous regime's roster and the addition of solid transfers, Enfield is implementing the same script at USC. A couple weeks ago it was Darion Clark from Charlotte, and now it's point guard Pe'Shon Howard from Maryland.

Unlike Clark who will have to sit a year, Howard is expected to receive a waiver to be able to play immediately. He played his prep career in southern California (partially documented in the excellent book Play Their Hearts Out), and now wants to be closer to his grandmother who is ill.

Howard has good size 6-3, 190, to play point. Unfortunately, he’s never quite put it together on the court. After his freshman season his career got derailed with injuries. First, he broke his foot and missed the first 9 games of his sophomore year, and then once he came back he tore his ACL.

Time lapse video of Cal's new floor

Written by Michael Rogner on .

Cal is breaking out their new visual identity, and this identity is apparently is full of thoughtful juju and not just what it looks like - which is a big ole bear. Cal Director of Athletics Sandy Barbour said. “The design enables us to increase exposure of our new visual identity while still maximizing exposure for the traditional Cal script.”

Regardless, the time lapse video is pretty cool.

DePaul star Cleveland Melvin joins fight against new arena

Written by Michael Rogner on .

DePaul forward Cleveland Melvin was the team's leading rebounder this season (6.8 rpg) and his 16.6 ppg trailed team leader Brandon Young by just a tenth of a point. But his loudest statement may have come this week when he joined over 1,000 other DePaul students signing a petition protesting the school's proposed new arena.

The students point to the poor timing with using $125 million in public money to build a private school a new arena. This comes at a time when Chicago is closing 50 public schools, and the university is raising tuition and freezing hiring.

The students' petition was delivered the same day that 24 members of the faculty - including department heads - delivered a letter which urged school President Dennis Holtschneider to withdraw from the project, claiming it is "wildly out of line with other university priorities."

We'll wait to see if head coach Oliver Purnell feels that his senior big man is wildly out of line with Blue Demon priorities.

Lawyers address game fixing charges vs Varez Ward

Written by Michael Rogner on .

Earlier today, Varez Ward pleaded not guilty to charges that he conspired to fix a game his team ended up losing to Arkansas in 2012. The trial date has been set for July 22nd.

In that game Ward came off the bench with Auburn up 4-0. He turned the ball over on his only possession before crumpling to the floor with an apparent leg injury.

Ward, a transfer from Texas, averaged 9.0 points, 3.8 assists, and 3.1 rebounds in his only season at Auburn.

After entering his plea, his lawyers address the media.
