The Diamondbacks swept the Marlins in a doubleheader yesterday, winning the two games 3-2 and 3-0. In a little bit of an interesting note, each Arizona starter was a rookie, and Wade Miley ad Tyler Skaggs both shut down the slumping Miami team. Arizona is still in this playoff race at three games above .500 and four games behind the second wild card leading Cardinals, and they need to stay hot to make a run.
Game of the Night: White Sox 2, Yankees 1. The White Sox took an early 1-0 lead on a Kevin Youkilis sac fly. but Derek Jeter tied the game up in the sixth with a homer. That would be all that Chicago would get off a dominant Chris Sale, and Alex Rios immediately answered the Jeter homer with one of his own. Addison Reed shut down the Yankees in the ninth, and the White Sox swept New York at home for the first time in 21 years, keeping them ahead of the Tigers in the AL Central.
Pitching Lines of the Night: Sale, Sale, and more Sale. He decimated the Yankees, allowing one run on three hits over 7 2/3 innings, walking one and striking out 13. What a season for him. Miley's dominance of the Marlinsl was excellent as well, throwing eight shutout frames and allowing just four hits, striking out five with only one walk. Tommy Milone was at home for the A's, so of course, he dominated the Twins in a 5-1 win. Milone went eight, allowed one run on two hits, walked one, and struck out five. Bronson Arroyo allowed two runs on three hits over eight innings in Philly in a 3-2 Reds win, striking out four without a walk.
Hitting Lines of the Night: In a 12-3 Rangers win over the Orioles, Adrian Beltre went 3/5 with three homers and five RBI. Not bad. In an 8-4 Giants win over the Dodgers, Joaquin Arias of all people went 3/4 with five RBI, two doubles, and a homer. Ryan Braun stayed hot in a 5-3 Brewers win over the Cubs, going 3/4 with two runs, two RBI, a double, a triple, and a homer. Coco Crisp gave Milone all the offense that the A'e needed in that win over the Twins, going 3/3 with three runs, two RBI, a walk, a double, a homer, and a steal.
Other Games: The Rays beat the Royals 5-3 to stay scorching hot. The Mariners also stayed hot, beating the Indians 3-1. The Padres continued their dominance of the Pirates, winning 4-2 to complete a sweep. The Tigers edged the Blue Jays 3-2. Kris Medlen dominated the Nationals in a 5-1 Braves win. Jered Weaver pitched well for the Angels in a 7-3 win over the Red Sox. The Rockies beat the Mets 5-2. The Cardinals beat the Astros 4-2.
Today's Games: Only half of the teams are playing today, and three of the eight games on the docket are day games. Justin Verlander starts for the Tigers against the Blue Jays. CJ Wilson starts for the Angels in Boston. Johnny Cueto and the Reds look for a series win against Cole Hamels and the Phillies. Scott Diamond and the Twins travel to Texas to take on Roy Oswalt and the Rangers.
Enjoy your day of baseball, everyone.
