VIDEO: Indians closer Chris Perez gets into it with a fan

Written by Joe Lucia on .

Deadspin posted this video today of Indians closer Chris Perez arguing with a fan in Oakland. Perez swore at the fan who was heckling him, and his best comebacks were "I have more saves than your entire team!" and "I was an All-Star again this year!", while the fan's major comeback was "LOOK AT THE STANDINGS!" which is pretty much a complete killer for any professional athlete.

Of course, Perez's response was "I don't care". Really Chris? You don't care that your team is 12 games behind the Orioles for the second wild card spot, and 11.5 games out in the AL Central? You don't care that your team has the second worst record in the American League? If you're a professional athlete, you're going to have to deal with hecklers, and cursing at them and being an asshole isn't really a great way to show your professionalism (hello, Melky Cabrera).

Perez is making $4.5 million this season, and still has two years of arbitration left. If I were the Indians, I'd consider trading him...not just because he'll be extremely expensive for a team going nowhere like Cleveland, but because of exploits unrelated to performance this season. He got fined for threatening the Royals on Twitter, threw up on the mound, and called Indians fans out for a lack of fan support (which seems silly considering how far the team has fallen in the second half). He's having a great year, but is causing so many headaches that the Tribe would best be served to deal him for younger talent in the offseason.

Shizamaaur, I"ll be happy to tell you what makes you an asshole.  You are mouthing off without any inkling of what the writer is talking about.  Baseball (which you admit you know nothing about) is ultimately a "team" game.  Perez seems to be only concerned with his own statistics (like many other assholes in pro ball).  The idea is to win games, not build up personal stats, and that makes Perez exactly what the writer infers he is.

Joe, you come off as an ass_hole. I'm not a baseball fan at all, but I can say that I'm not a fan of you. You sound like a condescending douche.

@shizamaaur I would like to know what exactly makes me an asshole....saying Chris Perez is a moron for not giving a damn that his team sucks? Pointing out that this isn't the first time that he's been in the spotlight for negative reasons this year? Please, enlighten me about how I'm the asshole in this situation.

@shizamaaur You have very strange reading habits for a person who doesn't like baseball "at all."  Yet you still feel the need to read this and call out the author.  I think we all know who the condescending douche is.

Don't you know that the Rage is modeling his career off Kenny Powers? This is the first I've agreed that trading him could be good idea. Vinnie Pestano is more than capable of taking over the ninth.
