Have been awful except for that little matter of being within one game of the World Series in 2007. I have a peculiar little habit with the people that write my checks, I say nothing about them.
the whole concept that people are not allowed to speak their minds and could be "blackballed"??? (blacklisted) is ludicrous just because someone signs a paycheck does not give them the right to try to keep you from gaining employment with someone else and the last time i checked these players sign contracts so if it does not have wording saying you cannot criticize then you cannot be fired for criticizing ,matt I think you have some serious misunderstandings as to how life works , yes if you work at a macdonalds and you say the management sucks to the customers you can be fired but they are not going to actively try to keep them from getting a job at some other burger joint. Perez simply spoke the truth and if they do not like it then maybe they should do something about it ....like actually attept to put a good team on the field the management and ownership in cleveland suck to the Nth degree and he just has had enough who wants to continually lose year after year after year, I wouldn't so maybe he was just trying to light a fire under their ass. Good for him.
"It's no secret that the Indians are awful, have been awful since the late '90s, and will continue to be awful for years to come."
The Indians were in 2nd place in 2011, 3rd in 2008, 1st in 2007 at 30 games over .500, 2nd in 2005 at 24 games over .500, 3rd in 2004, 3rd in 2002, 1st in 2001 at 20 games over .500, and 2nd in 2000. Your statement isn't true at all.
@JoshuaMulligan As a Tiger's fan I agree with you 100% you guys give us a run every game!
@JoshuaMulligan and where did they finish at the end of the year.......not in the WS and being the best in a shitty division is nothing to brag about.
@Joeyjojo Shabadoo JR So by your definition there are 28 awful teams every year?... You're a moron... He wasn't bragging about the Indians... He was pointing out that the "journalists" statement about the team being awful since the late 1990s was incorrect... Believe me, I know awful... I sat through Indians games in the 1980s when they were truly awful... They had 100 loss seasons every other year... Finishing 81-81 is mediocre... It's not awful.
@robertloggia17 no there are some teams like the royals and the indians and the astros and the cubs and the pirates and the marlins and the o's who consistently suck and are rarely if ever in contention for anything other than second or third or last in their division. I am an astros fan and I know that their oner sucks drayton mclane was a horroble owner that continually fired good front office people and the new owner ship is no different they are already showing that the only thing they care about is making a profit ...not a huge profit just a profit. otherwise they would not have agreed to the league switch, the o's have finally started trying to do the right thing by hiring buck and letting him have some say so in some front office decisions , because when you hire someone to do a job and you handcuff them for financial reasons or because you think you cxan do their job or because you are the boss and you want things done your way even if your way is the losing way is wrong and stupid .
@JayDScott @JoshuaMulligan I am an astros fan ,I also am familiar with stinkin' it up I can root for the yanks again because steinbrenner is dead ( I am a huge billy martin fan) but Perez is frustrated and with good reason Indians front office& management have made some down right bad decisions in the past few years and he has every right to express his beliefs it is a free country and if they do not like it they can not extend his contract or they can trade him getting to go to a team that may actually do something and be in contention every year might actually be his intended goal with the public statements.. My point was that the author of this blog post was out of touch with reality in thinking that an employer has the right to be a petty vindictive jerk just because he pays someone to do a job .....and while Perez might not be just blowin people away right now he still has 34 saves and that in my book is the very definition of doing his damn job good he will potentially have 40 saves this season if the sorry indians can win 6 more games.....(that is a joke ) so don't get your panties in a wad ands 40 saves is no slouching effort so to reitterate he has earned the right to call out the front office they are not doing thy're jobs and he is.
After 54 years and a move to Florida in my near future...I'm done...I'll be a half season ticket holder of the Tampa Rays, that will be my new team. I'm tired of hearing the small market excuse, put a major league team on the field and people will come. It sucks whem you have a nice new BMW but forgot to include gas in your budget. Shapiro is still living off his lucky Colon trade ( and how many playoff teams did THAT trade bring us?) And Antonetti spent more millions to buy spare parts then it would 2 starters, not to mention the great Sizemore signing. See ya in the playoffs Cleveland...I'll be the one with the "X" through the chief
Chris Perez is just reaffirming what the fans have been saying for years about the lousy ownership by the Dolan's and their azzzclowns $hapiro and Antonetti! Gotta spend money nowadays and they so tight with their money, it's ridiculous! Time for new ownership and a complete sweep of the front office and the manager.
Sad to say but Perez is right on the money... we unloaded not just one but two Cy Young winners because it was obvious ownership wasn't going to allow management to pay them a fair market salary ... That being said the GM was in the drivers seat when suitors came calling for our aces .. we should have gotten much, much, much more for the talent we gave away.. Its obvious that the our scouts and the GM are grossly incompetent and unable to assess talent. although teams knew we had to sell our assets we should have commanded more in return... If talent evaluation and negotiations are not the GM's strong points what the hell is he getting paid to do....oh by the way I'm a little 65 yr old male next time you want to spend a million dollars on some washed up players please give me a call.. I will work for 1/2 the cost and probably produce the same batting avg as the guys you brought.... Call me
Perez has a big mouth and he really isn't that great. Earlier in the season he was talking trash about how the Indians were " a good baseball team" and how they don't need big name free agents like Fielder and Cabrera, now he wants those players on his team. Its one think when a guy with a great career or at least a few decent ones speaks up, but come on this guy will be gone in a few seasons selling insurance to Terrell Owens.
The problems started when MLB allowed an at best minor league owner buy a major league franchise. The man does not have the money to field a competitive club. The team needs to be sold to someone that can spend the money to put a winner on the field. As the old saying goes; You get what you pay for!!!
I would say this is "bad journalism", but the author is clearly not a journalist... You say "awful since the late '90s"... They won Division titles in 2001 and 2007.
@robertloggia17 Flattered by your assessment. I'm actually a writer for ESPN.com in addition to the Trib and covered the Midwest League for parts of two seasons for MLB.com.
@robertloggia17 Matt actually works for the Chicago Tribune as his day job.
Even with those two division titles, they've finished under .500 in eight of the last 11 years. Barring a miracle this year, they'll have had under 70 wins in three of the last four years. That's pretty terrible.
5 80-plus win seasons in the last nine year's isn't exactly awful or terrible... It's not great... It's actually mediocre... But not awful or terrible.
He either wants out, or is trying to compete with Joe Haden and Kyrie Irving for Cleveland's most beloved professional athlete. Now, if he starts talking about Art Modell today, what he says will let us know which it is.
@awfulannouncing Good to see that the "players vs front office" animosity is still alive and well in Cleveland. #MajorLeague
@ScottRaab64 RT @awfulannouncing Indians closer C.Perez has now taken to ripping his owner/GM in Cleveland. Good times. http://t.co/vYWn6DAQ
