Freddy Galvis suspended for PED use

Written by Joe Lucia on .

Phillies rookie second baseman Freddy Galvis has been suspended 50 games for PED usage, as tweeted by the official MLB account.

Oh my. Just when you think things can't get worse for the Phillies, this happens. Galvis was already on the DL with a fracture in his lower spine, and will be able to serve the suspension while hurt...but he'll forfeit his pay. John Clark of Philadelphia's NBC 10 is reporting that Galvis tested positive for a metabolite of clostebal. Wikipedia defines clostebal as a synthetic anabolic steroid that was primarily used by East German athletes in past doping scandals.

Because of Galvis's injury, this suspension really won't hurt the Phillies in the here and now. But it's just another cherry on the sundae of bad luck that the Phillies are eating this season. With Galvis on the DL, and Chase Utley still not ready to come back yet, the Phillies are currently using a combination of Mike Fontenot and Michael Martinez at second base. Both Fontenot and Martinez are terrible defensively, and don't offer much upside on offense.

This is just not the year for the Phillies.

I hate to say this but I will , am a huge fan of Cliff Lee , going back to his Indian days and winning the Cy Young for them , since the poor guy cant win but has a great e.r.a , try him out at second base , I mean really he has a great arm , maybe he could throw out some guys who would be trying to steal bases or a possible double play .
