VIDEO: Pirates prospect Gerrit Cole hit in face with line drive

Written by Joe Lucia on .

This is graphic, and scary. Pittsburgh Pirates prospect Gerrit Cole, the number one overall pick in last year's amateur draft, was hit in the face with a line drive last night in the Altoona Curve's game against the Harrisburg Senators. Cole has down for a substantial amount of time after he was hit, but eventually returned to his feet, and finished out the inning. He left the game after the first inning due to swelling in his face. After he was hit, he hit a batter and allowed a single (that Cole himself deflected again) before getting a strikeout to end the inning. The start was just Cole's second in AA.

Cole, who was ranked preseason as the #1 prospect in the Pirates organization and a top ten prospect in all of baseball, threw 33 pitches in his lone inning of work on Tuesday, and that combined with the swelling was enough to end Cole's night as a precaution. Pirates Prospects is reporting that Cole tested negative for a concussion, a CT scan showed no broken bones, and that his only injury is a contusion on his jaw. He's not expected to miss his next start, much to the joy of Pirates fans everywhere. Thank god this didn't end up worse, because when you see something like this happen, you immediately expect the worst case scenario, like when Juan Nicasio got hit last season.
