The Wilton Lopez trade to the Phillies is off

Written by Joe Lucia on .

Yesterday, we brought you the news of the Astros potentially trading closer Wilton Lopez to the Phillies. Well, today it appears that the trade will not be happening after Lopez's physical with the Phillies hadn't gone well. Reportedly, Lopez's elbow is what gave Philadelphia's doctors pause.

The Phillies were reportedly going to send pitcher Tyler Cloyd and catcher Sebastian Valle to the Astros in the trade, a pair of players that are very close to being major league ready, though neither has a great ceiling. The Phillies will instead need to look elsewhere, perhaps in a loaded free agent market that includes Mike Adams, Koji Uehara, and Jason Grilli, but based on what relievers are going for this offseason, it might be in Amaro's best interest to keep sniffing around the trade market.
