This is actually quite painful to watch: a video highlighting the events that have gone on since the Pirates' 1992 season ended. Since that year, the team has gone out to put together an unreal 20 straight losing seasons. Some of the highlights include...
-Five (soon to be six in about five weeks) US presidential elections
-Four new MLB teams, all of which have won pennants and two of which have won World Championships
-The Expos franchise moving from Montreal to Washington, becoming the Nationals, and clinching a playoff berth led by Bryce Harper, who was born two days after the Pirates NLCS Game Seven loss to the Braves
-Former Pirates manager Jim Leyland winning two pennants and one World Championship
-Former Pirate great Barry Bonds signing with the Giants, and setting the all-time and single season home run records
-The imposion of Three Rivers Stadium, and the building of both PNC Park and Heinz Field in Pittsburgh
The video also highlights the Pirates' 2012 collapse from 16 games above .500 to where they are now, and all of the in-season blunders that took them there. Our own Pat Lackey has written scores of words about this season over at WHYGAVS, so if you want details, give his page a look. Of course, the video wouldn't be complete without a portion dedicated to Jerry Meals' awful call in July 2011 that many point the finger at for turning the Pirates season into a disaster.
Some other things that have happened in the world of sports, Pittsburgh and non-Pittsburgh related, *not* included in the video...
-Work stoppages in all four major professional sports
-Both the Penguins and Steelers winning championships
-Pitt basketball winning four Big East championships and making the Elite Eight in 2009
-Pitt football winning two Big East championships
-Pitt leaving the Big East
-Mario Lemieux was diagnosed with cancer, retired from hockey, was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame, bought the Penguins, returned to actively playing hockey, won an Olympic gold medal, and retired again
-Jerome Bettis's entire career happened, including a Super Bowl title, TV stints on both NBC and the NFL Network
-The Mets are still paying Bobby Bonilla, the former Pirate who signed with New York after the 1991 season
So everything hasn't been bad in Pittsburgh...except for the Pirates, that is. For the sake of their fans, I hope this streak ends next year.
