Astros rookie pitcher Mickey Storey hit in face with line drive

Written by Joe Lucia on .

In the wake of Brandon McCarthy getting hit in the side of the head last week and the horrifying aftermath, this is some scary, scary stuff. Houston Astros rookie reliever Mickey Storey was hit in the face with a line drive in Wednesday's game against the Cubs. The ball was hit in the eighth inning by Dave Sappelt of the Cubs.

Thankfully, it appears the ball initially deflected off Storey's hand or shoulder before hitting him in the cheek area. Storey was immediately pulled from the game, and hopefully the injury is no worse than a broken bone. Because the ball didn't hit Storey in the skull, we can hopefully rule out any possible brain damage or hemorraging.

Here's the problem with the call for pitchers to wear helmets: they still don't protect your face. Best wishes to Storey, and we all hope he has a speedy recovery.
