Escobar suspended three games for eye black incident

Written by Joe Lucia on .

The Yunel Escobar eye black incident has cost the shortstop three games, reports Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports

In case you haven't heard, a photo of Escobar surfaced from Saturday's Blue Jays game wearing eye black that had an inflammatory statement written on it. Toronto was idle on Monday, and Escobar has been suspended for the team's next three games, taking place this week in New York.

Both the MLBPA and MLB are in agreement with the suspension, and it was also announced that Escobar's salary for the three games he's missing will be donated to You Can Play and GLAAD, with Escobar also participating in an outreach program to encourage tolerance.

During a press conference after the statement was announced, Escobar said the phrase was intended as a joke and he meant no disrespect towards anyone. Escobar also said that the incident would never happen again.

Blue Jays manager John Farrell said that he didn't think anything of the phrasing at first because of how frequently Escobar writes something underneath his eyeblack, and didn't realize it was a slur until he was later informed.
