On this Memorial Day, we're celebrating the beginning of league-wide interleague play in MLB. Every team will face a team from the opposite league today, and in most cases, the teams squaring off will be rivals: the Orioles and Nationals, the Giants and Athletics, the Royals and Cardinals, the Cubs and White Sox, the Yankees and Mets..and of course, the Ohio Cup battle between the Indians and Reds.
This morning on Twitter, the Indians fired the first shot in this fun rivarly on Twitter by posting a picture of the Ohio Cup.
Well played, Indians. Well played. But the Reds' response to the Indians' tweet was the nuclear option, and absolutely hilarious.
Yikes. The Indians have won two World Championships in their history, but none since 1948. Since 1948, they've also won three AL pennants, but have fallen in the World Series on all three occasions. The Tribe has made the playoffs just once in the last decade, winning the AL Central and falling in the ALCS to the Red Sox in 2007, blowing a 3-1 series lead in the process.
On the other hand, the Reds have won five World Championships in their franchise's history, includine one in 1990. They've won the NL Central in two of the last three years, bowing out in the NLDS in both 2010 and 2012. This season, both teams are playing well and are both in second place in their division, 1.5 games behing the Tigers and Cardinals respectively.
This could end up being those most significant Ohio Cup battle in years, and it's great to see both teams having some fun with it and hopefully getting fans riled up in the process. Monday and Tuesday's games will take place at the Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati, while Wednesday and Thursday's games will take place at Progressive Field in Cleveland.
