No one was surprised when the Baltimore Ravens replaced kicker Billy Cundiff after he shanked a game tying field goal in the conference championship game last January. It didn't take long for Cundiff to find a new team though.
The Washington Redskins announced today that they had cut kicker Graham Gano and signed Billy Cundiff, who was unemployed for only 2 days following being cut by the Ravens.
Cundiff has connected on 132 of 172 career field goal attempts (76.7%) and 200 of 201 extra point attempts (99.5%). Cundiff has been in the NFL since 2002, but he still has a strong leg.
Graham Gano, by contrast, is viewed as a somewhat erratic kicker. He also has a big leg, but the Redskins were looking for a guy that can knock through clutch kicks late in a game to give them an extra win or two. Considering Cundiff's kick from January, I'm not exactly sure that's what they're getting.
