Based on the fact that we now have what appears to be a full-blown officiating controversy in the NFL, we sure picked a good year to starting documenting all of the stupid things that take place in the world of professional football. Week 14 didn't disappoint. Or did it? I guess it depends on whether your team got screwed.
The stupidest fourth-quarter coaching strategy
As soon as Colin Kaepernick converted a first down inside Seattle's 10-yard line with 3:18 to play in a game that the Seahawks led by a point, Pete Carroll should have done the quick math and opted to let the Niners score. The Seahawks were out of timeouts, which means San Fran was able to run the ball three straight times to take the clock under the 30-second mark before making a chip shot field goal. The odds of them missing that kick or turning the ball over on first, second or third down were still definitely lower than the odds of Seattle scoring a touchdown in a two-minute drill to finish the game.
Had Seattle let San Fran score on first down, the 'Hawks would have had about 2:30 to respond with a game-tying or game-winning touchdown (depending on what happened on the Niners' two-point attempt). So for all intents and purposes, Seattle had to choose between these options:
1. Drive for a field goal in about 25 seconds with no timeouts.
2. Drive for a touchdown in about 150 seconds with the two-minute warning.
To me, that shouldn't even be a debate.
The stupidest fourth down defensive formation
This one comes from Sam Monson over at Pro Football Focus...
Yes, Tom Brady picked up an easy first down on a drive that resulted in a field goal.
The stupidest pass interference call
But there were plenty of horrendous calls to choose from this week. The other that really stands out came from Jerome Boger's crew late in the Cleveland-New England game. Trailing by five, the Patriots were attempting what was essentially a Hail Mary with half a minute to go. It landed incomplete, but the officials apparently deemed this to be pass interference on Leon McFadden...
That was a 29-yard penalty, and it probably decided the winner of the game. Unbelievable.
The second-stupidest pass interference call
There was also this phantom DPI on Chad Greenway with half a minute left in the Vikings-Ravens game.
Without that call, Joe Flacco's interception isn't wiped out and the Ravens lose. These silly calls are carrying major playoff implications.
The stupidest post-play decision
Darnell Dockett lost his cool and decided to stomp on Chris Williams' hand:
Found this tweet from Dockett back in June...
Sorry, Darnell, but even in the NFL, that isn't acceptable. He deserves a hefty fine.
The stupidest officiating decision
Two questions about Jeff Triplette.
1. How in the world did Triplette determine during a replay review that there was conclusive evidence that BenJarvus Green-Ellis made it into the end zone on this fourth-down run, despite the fact that he clearly did not?
2. How in the world is Triplette still employed by the NFL?
“Are you kidding me?" said Greg Gumbel on the broadcast. "Are you kidding me? Not touched?”
i never brought up anything about dirty hits. what are you talking about? what you & i have been going back & forth on is every one having a right to their opinion. i never said anything about ward hitting the pats TE. hell no i don't like what happened but it happened. so no here i not go again. this time you have it wrong because from the beginning i never said anything about dirt hits. i do not want to argue with you toofatguycards. i have always said everyone is entitled to their opinion so if you in fact received such a statement i can tell you it isn't me &God knows that. what i emailed earlier i'm not sure went thru so i'll tell you. i apologized for earlier disagreements & than ked you for the updated info. you sent me. i had said after reading your lengthy comments i would not insult you like you thought i would. life is too short for that & rather we agree to disagree you have a right to your opinion just like i do & it should just end there. but this back & forth is no winner. so i'll say this. if you want true email just ask for my email or give me yours & that way whatever is mentioned isn't coming from an outsider. just for the record when i voice my opinion i do it not for controversy or confrontation. i have seen this at my job to the point of arguing & to me isn't worth it. we don't get paid to get upset, angry, etc. to voice our statements.
Its no trouble, please ignore my other post from the other thread, i was a bit upset by then and that one could definetly come off as rude and mean on my part. I apologize also. As a Cleveland fan, i have had nothing but heartbreak with my team, but to see what happend Sunday really got me. I know the Pats have the talent to overcome most teams and mistakes, it was just satisfying in a small way knowing my Browns were gonna do something no other team this year could do, knock off the unbeaten at home Pats, and likely playoff team. See thats what us Browns fans have to hang our hat on lol. Anyways have a nice day, and best of luck to your Pats, they are good, but the Broncos are scary good lol.
Ok i apologize. i did not mean for this to get ugly as it did. you are right that the pats were outplayed & not in just this game. i'm just glad they find ways to win despite their shortcomings. if i offended you i do apologize for that because as i've indicated everyone has a right to express their opinion & i'm not in this for arguments sake. no i will not insult you, esp. when you tried to reach out to explain something i obviously had no knowledge of at the time. and no there will be no gaskets blown blatantly or otherwise. thanks for the updated info. & you have a happy holiday. remember we are a family in Christ. He would want that. good day.
See here you are again, blatantly lying. What dirty hit? The NFL has been fining people all year for LEGAL hits like the Ahmad Brooks hit, but T.J. Ward wasn't flagged, nor fined on that play why you may ask? Because it was 100% legal. You may not like what happend, and i don't blame you, Gronk is a beast, and fun to watch, but that doesn't mean you can call it dirty, it wasn't, even the NFL said it wasn't.
And btw, i have watched my players go down by dirty hits, like the one that gave Jason Campbell a concussion and he had to miss games, like the one that put Brian Hoyer out for the season. Both dirty hits, both players fined by the NFL. So yes i know what it means when you lose a player that affects your team.
So i will just say this, i have my right to my opinion as well, if you don't want to hear someone else's opinion maybe don't voice yours?
you are entitled to your opinions like i'm entitled to mine. when i post my remarks i meant what i said in regards to the patriots win sunday. it is no question about the patriots getting bad breaks from sour calls as well as dirty hits putting players out of the game. think if it were your team i'm certain you would feel different. again this is not for debate, controversy, just another statement. again all is entitled to their opinion. good day.
I'm going to throw up after reading these comments. Pats got bailed out, after complaining about a no-call against the Panthers (which is debatable) and then claiming Benjarvus didn't get touched? wtf?
the new england game was not a fluke & no, new england had the right calls called in that game, unlike the panthers game & new york jets game. before the last pass was caught there was interference & there was honest refs for a change to call it right. let's face it, new england hasn't had a good year because of injuries, a criminal who no longer is with the team & some hell of calls against them. many do not like this team but give credit where it is due.... like or hate them, they are a team to be reckoned with. wait til they are healthy, enough said.
@toofatguyscards don't worry toofatguyscard i think we both have that passion that can get out of hand. i can see why you said the things you did. actually your team is better than their record, they just had some bad breaks but their defense is awesome. so no, no insults will fly. i emailed you earlier because of something about dirty hits. i never mentioned anything about hits, etc. i really do believe it could be tampered with at this moment. that was not me that said that. my intentions is not to stir things up, but to make peace in a diplomatic way. you heard it here first. if you get anything else off the wall let me know so i can look at it because as you may know there are 11 or so persons reading this back & forth & although i'm not blaming any one, i will say things can be added with us being innocent to it. you have a happy holiday & who knows what will happen in the NFL. as i say, anyone can win on any given day. we have seen that too often. you're right, the broncos are there alright.... it would be nice to see them knocked out like last year ha ha.
@AdrienneVaughn Sorry but you clearly didn't see the play, both the receiver and the corner put their hands out on the other for a split second, even when running routes, receivers are not permitted to use their hands and push off or away a defender, nor is the defender. They both locked hands briefly which didn't affect the play. And on top of that if that was the call, it happened at around the 20 yard line, why did they get it on the one? They called what was shown because it occurred in the end zone. Otherwise it would have been a spot foul, and the Pats would have gotten it much farther from the goal line and likely lost. Just because they got shafted in a different game doesn't mean they get a gimme when they were clearly dominated by a lesser team in their house. learn the rules before you post blatantly wrong stuff.
@toofatguyscards @AdrienneVaughn EXCUSE ME BUT I DO NOT BELIEVE I ASK FOR YOUR COMMENTS ON THIS ONE. I STATED WHAT I STATED WITHOUT HAVING SOMEONE QUICK TO ARGUE THEIR VIEW, BE CONTROVERSAL & CONFRONTATIONAL FOR THAT MATTER SUCH AS YOU ARE INDICATING HERE. EVERY PERSON HAS A BLATANT RIGHT TO VOICE THEIR OPINION WITHOUT IT BEING SHREDDED OR JUDGED JUST BECAUSE THEY DO NOT SEE IT YOUR WAY. SO MAYBE THE PATRIOTS WERE OUTPLAYED BUT KNOW THIS: THEY FIND WAYS TO WIN DESPITE NOT HAVING A HEALTHY TEAM DUE TO INJURIES & RELYING FOR THE MOST PART ON ROOKIES. MAYBE YOU NEED TO RETHINK BEFORE YOU BLOW ANOTHER GASKET ON YOUR COMMENTS. I'M ENTITLED TO MY OPINION & BLATANTLY SO.
Just incase your actually interested, here is an article from Mike Perriara former head of the NFL officiating crews, and now lead analyst for Fox NFL i believe, and he comments on all supposed calls, and lets you know what the league would do since he did that job for a long time.
But i am sure you will just insult me, be generally rude, and type in all caps because i am just pointing out where you are wrong. Have a nice day.
@AdrienneVaughn @toofatguyscards Wow really cry much? So let me get this straight, you say you can say your opinion but i can't? is that right? Because that's what your doing. Only the last 2 sentences of my entire post could be considered inflammatory. All i did was point out where you were 100% wrong on the rule, i didn't insult you for it, i wasn't rude, i just pointed out you were wrong. Is that what constitutes inflammatory this day and age? Your leaving an opinion post about something you were 100% wrong about. Do you understand that? Your the one who made excuses for the Pats, that they didn't get calls all year, or they had injuries, and you said they had a bad year. They have a chance to go 13-3, you know how many teams would love that "bad year"?
Its sad you would sit their and talk about how you didn't ask for comments, but then blatantly gave misinformation, and when corrected it's you who blows your top, not I. Your the one typing in all caps, Your the one saying i am confrontational, Your the one saying people have a right to voice their opinion? See the irony here? You are insulting me, trying to tell me what i have to say means nothing, and being judged because you do not understand how a pass interference call works.
All i did was point out where you were wrong. The only "rude" thing i said was that the Patriots got demolished in their stadium. Again the sad part is ITS TRUE. I didn't say you got demolished, that point wasn't even directed at you, it was directed at the Patriots. The only rude ting i said to YOU was for you to learn the rules, and i was right, you do not understand the rules, so you need to learn them before posting them on a comment page about how their clearly was interference 20 yards before the end-zone. If you do not want to learn, that is fine, but do not jump down the throat of someone trying to make sure correct information is out their.
I will end with the same thing you ended with, because it works for me also. MAYBE YOU SHOULD RETHINK BEFORE YOU BLOW ANOTHER GASKET ON YOUR COMMENTS. i 'M ENTITLE TO MY OPINION & BLATANTLY SO.
