Vince Young the most eligible free agent quarterback

With rosters down to just 53 players, there’s bound to be a run on free agents in the coming days. One of the most eligible such players is now Vince Young, who failed to stick with the Green Bay Packers, but this is a quarterback needy league, and Vince Young can still play.

Frankly, it’s strange to see such a talented quarterback with a winning record looking for work. Because Young has shown instability off the field in the past, teams may be staying away to avoid a distraction, but the fact is Vince Young will add value to a team willing to pluck him out of free agency.

With a number of quarterbacks hitting the market at one time, it’s hard to imagine anything but a high level of competition to score jobs with one of the league’s 32 teams, but unlike most of the other options, Vince Young has an NFL arm and can make smart decisions on the field. That will play to his advantage.

In the coming weeks, there will be teams that need an emergency makeover at the quarterback position. Early suspects seem to be the Jets, Raiders and Jaguars. Those teams are rolling out sketchy options at best, and a collapse by at least one of them seems likely.

If a quarterback implosion does occur, Vince Young could be at the top of the list of potential stop-gap players. Unlike others, Young has the raw talent to stick somewhere, and considering his showing with the Packers, he may garner more interest from around the league now that teams have had a better look at him.

There’s no guarantee for players entering free agency after being cut prior to the start of the regular season, but Vince Young has the talent to make a positive impact on a number of NFL rosters. One would believe those teams will at least give him a quiet look, and potentially, an opportunity to impress them.
