The future of the Pro Bowl is uncertain following yesterday's all-star event. Its fate will be decided over the course of the coming offseason, and there's no specific timeline in place for the commissioner and the NFL to make a decision about the possibility of a Pro Bowl in 2014, but that shouldn't take away from yesterday's game, which gave us plenty of entertaining moments.
Peyton Manning, Jeff Saturday Share One Final Snap
In the first quarter of the Pro Bowl, Green Bay center Jeff Saturday switched teams for one play to share one final snap with quarterback Peyton Manning. The two led a prolific offense in Indianapolis from 2000 to 2010. Saturday is planning on retiring, and that type of move, something that would never be allowed in a regular season game, is what the Pro Bowl is and should be all about.
Ed Hochuli, "Yes there are penalties in the Pro Bowl."
Late in the second quarter, Denver quarterback Champ Bailey was flagged for pass interference in the endzone. No one likes to see penalties in an all-star event, which may have been why referee Ed Hochuli gave the penalty, starting with the phrase, "Yes there are penalties in the Pro Bowl." It was nothing short of hilarious.
J.J. Watt Going Out as a Receiver
Houston's star defensive end lobbied heavily all week to get the opportunity to catch a pass, and that lobbying paid off in the Pro Bowl. Watt saw two passes thrown his way, but unfortunately one was batted down and the other, thrown to him in the endzone, was intercepted. Still, when would we have ever seen J.J. Watt cutting through a defense outside of the Pro Bowl?
There was no question that yesterday's game provided more entertainment than Pro Bowls in recent memory. No one knows if it was enough to save the game for at least another year, but I enjoyed it. If that's the last Pro Bowl's swan song, that's not a bad way for an NFL tradition to be put to rest.
