Geno Smith looks out of shape according to report

Brian Baldinger of the NFL Network was present at Jets practice this weekend, paying particular interest to rookie quarterback Geno Smith, who is looking to replace Mark Sanchez as the Jets’ starting quarterback. For the most part, Baldinger was impressed with Smith’s work, with one glaring exception.

“He looked good to me yesterday until he ran gassers at the end of practice,” said Baldinger, who attended Jets practice on Sunday. “And Geno Smith looked like he had done no conditioning. It was actually embarrassing to see how far behind he was behind [Mark] Sanchez and [Matt] Simms and everybody else that's there.”

Even though Smith is out of shape compared to the other quarterbacks on the Jets’ roster, NFL Network analyst heath Evans did have some positive notes about Smith that could spell doom for incumbent quarterback Mark Sanchez.

“You see a lot of accuracy, a lot of zip on the ball obviously from Geno,” Evans said. “You see some balls sailing, or what I would say floating, for Sanchez.”

It’s a bit concerning to see a quarterback looking as out of shape as Geno Smith is said to be, but the more important factor, you know, of throwing the ball, is there for Smith while it still lacks for Sanchez.

Ultimately, Rex Ryan and the coaching staff will make their final decision of who will be the starting quarterback based on the quarterbacks’ ability to run their offense. If that’s the case, early signs are beginning to point to Smith as the early frontrunner, although preseason action will mean much more than controlled drills in the first few days of training camp.
