The Eagles are moving forward with training camp, as are the other 31 teams in the NFL, but the Eagles still aren’t sure who will be taking snaps at the beginning of the season.
According to John Gonzalez of CSNPhilly.com, Michael Vick and Nick Foles split first-team reps again. Vick completed, unofficially, 9 of 14 passes while Foles completed 9 of 16. Gonzalez notes that neither quarterback did anything to separate himself.
Matt Barkley was the only quarterback that did anything impressive at all, completing 9 of 11 passes in 15 snaps, including a deep pass to Greg Salas, according to the report.
For the incumbent, Michael Vick, time may be running out. The longer he fails to impress his coaches, the greater the possibility that another quarterback will step up to the plate in a big way. While Nick Foles is the only man that could unseat Vick right now, a few good outings in preseason action by Matt Barkley could at least get him in the conversation.
Considering the price tag to keep Vick on as a backup, it seems likely the Eagles would release him if he doesn’t claim the starting job by the beginning of the season.
On the other hand, Vick’s mobility gives him an advantage over his competition. Chip Kelly’s high-octane offense could use that mobility to great advantage, so we can imagine Chip Kelly secretly hoping Vick separates himself from Foles and Barkley in the near future.
