Draft season is usually dominated by the discussion of where high ranked quarterbacks will be drafted, but that hasn't been the case this year. It's widely believed that Geno Smith will be selected inside the top ten in April's draft, but beyond that it's a crapshoot. Matt Barkley will likely be drafted at some point in the first round, largely due to the lack of quarterback prospects beyond him.
The Kansas City Chiefs didn't wait to find their quarterback, making a trade to bring in former 49ers quarterback Alex Smith. The move wasn't surprising considering the Chiefs' desperate need for a quarterback. Now, Chiefs general manager John Dorsey is giving us a little insight as to why the Chiefs pulled the trigger on a trade to bring in a quarterback so long before the draft.
"There is no quarterback where personnel guys can definitely say, 'He's a first-round pick,'" Dorsey told The Kansas City Star. "There were so many inconsistencies in the collective group. There was not one guy that stood up and said, 'I'm the guy in the position this year.' There really wasn't one clear-cut guy."
"There are too many technical flaws, scheme flaws. There are so many different variables, that there are a lot of people all over the place on naming the top four or five guys and who those guys would be."
While Dorsey is correct in his assessment that there are no quarterbacks that completely deserve a first round grade, he was smart enough to realize that those deserving of a second round grade may be gone by the time the Chiefs are presented with their choice in the second round of the draft. The decision to avoid the quarterback fray in this year's draft was a stroke of genius, regardless of whether Alex Smith works out well for the Chiefs. With the move, the Chiefs can focus on building the rest of their roster instead of stressing over which signal caller to draft.
