The Houston Texans may not have hit rock bottom just yet, and after losing to the lowly Jacksonville Jaguars, that’s a scary thought. With the loss, the Texans have now dropped nine straight games, and they’re now dead last in the AFC South during a season in which they were supposed to make a run at the Super Bowl.
The Texans played solid defense throughout the game, only allowing 13 points, albeit to the worst offensive team in the league. On the other side of the ball, the Texans’ offensive woes continued, scoring just six points in four quarters.
It is now abundantly clear that the Texans will be making big changes to their organization following this lost season. Under head coach Gary Kubiak, the Texans have always, at least in the minds of many, been chronic underachievers. Although changing the head coach won’t fix all their problems, expect Kubiak to be one of the first casualties of this season.
Beyond that, the Texans will certainly be in the market for a new quarterback, and considering they’re now at the bottom of the league, expect Houston to take a look at picking up a new quarterback early in the 2014 draft.
Defensively, the Texans have remained strong, despite their offense’s problems. It’s hard to say just what will become of that side of the ball. The team’s defensive personnel may remain largely the same moving forward, but a new head coach could mean a completely new defensive coaching staff, which could cause unrest next season.
The Texans’ current problems are something of a conundrum. Although the Texans are fighting injuries just like every other team in the league, there’s no definitive problem with the players that line up on the field week in and week out. Obviously, the Texans need better play from their quarterbacks, but with no one raising their level of play, there’s no easy solutions either.
The Jaguars, to their credit, have been improving all season, especially since their bye week, but there’s no reason a team with as much talent as the Texans should be losing to the Jags. With the Patriots up next, it would be surprising to see the Texans snap their losing streak a week from now. It’s bad in Houston right now, but it could get worse yet.
