Week 4 wasn't as stupid as the first three weeks of the NFL season, but we still got a large enough dosage of stupidity to hit the required weekly quota. A breakdown...
The stupidest group of fans
That goes to this silly Jacksonville-based group of Tim Tebow supporters who just won't give up. They wasted a bunch of time and money Sunday by flying this banner over EverBank Field...
The stupidest fourth-quarter everything
This goes to the Texans, whose offense took the field midway through the fourth quarter with a one-score lead against the powerhouse Seahawks and ran three consecutive passing plays before having to punt. They got the ball back after a Russell Wilson interception, ran a few times but then attempted a hilariously stupid passing play on third-and-four with less than three minutes to play.
That resulted in a game-tying pick six from Richard Sherman.
Now, the play call itself was stupid. But even stupider was Matt Schaub's decision to do anything but take a sack at this moment...
The best part is that head coach Gary Kubiak said afterwards that Schaub had no choice but to run what he admitted was a "very, very poor play."
“Once we called it, started the motion, it was game on," said Kubiak, making no sense. Why can't your veteran quarterback audible? Why can't he call timeout or take a delay-of-game penalty? What a stupid explanation regarding a stupid play. Everyone reading is now stupider having listened to it. I award the Texans no points, and may God have mercy on their souls.
The stupidest something
I won't call this the stupidest penalty, because some might argue it shouldn't be a penalty (although on paper it was stupid regardless) and I won't call it the stupidest call because some will argue that it was the right call. Regardless, either the officials did something stupid, or Kareem Jackson did.
In overtime of that same Seattle-Houston game, the Texans had Seattle in a third-down situation at midfield, but Jackson body-slammed Doug Baldwin, drawing a flag and an automatic first down. Four plays later, the Seahawks were able to kick the game-winning field goal.
Check out the video here. Baldwin's forward progress had stopped and you could hear a whistle, so the roughness probably was unnecessary. That said, it wasn't too egregious and Jackson could argue that he was just getting the offensive player down. The whistle hadn't been blown long before the infraction. I'm on the fence, because I do believe the officials have to "let them play" a little bit in these big moments, but Jackson probably should have known better.
Let's just agree that the entire situation was stupid.
The stupidest attempt to get fancy
This is Geno Smith trying to avoid a sack, or something, by transferring the ball from one hand to another behind his back...
The result, of course, is a fumble recovered by the Titans in the Jets' end zone.
The stupidest contract of all time
I'd merely like to confirm this week that Joe Flacco's $120.6 million deal is the worst ever. Poor Ravens were victimized by that hot stretch in January. They really had no choice but to pay the man. Unfortunately, he's a below-average quarterback 95 percent of the time.
He was far below average Sunday in Buffalo, throwing five interceptions against a Bills team that was without its top two cornerbacks. Flacco's passer rating this year is now 69.8, which pretty much puts him in a group with Brandon Weeden, Christian Ponder, EJ Manuel Geno Smith.
Hello ya'all. I'm reading about all the criticism of Joe Flacco, Brandon Weeden, Christian Ponder EJ Manuel, Geno Smith. These are ALL starting QB's in the NFL.
The are all making mistakes and all losing games for their prospective teams.
So WHY is it, everybody's hard on Tim Tebow but he has of yet to get a chance with a team of his own to run the ball, run the ball, do the read/option (like Caepernick in San Francisco), and Seahawks QB Russell Wilson.??
Isn't someone going to see that Tebow will make mistakes, have a low QB passer rating: BECAUSE, that is the nature of the run n shoot. Nobody open, run. Can't run, throw the ball away.
Or would his critics prefer he hold the ball until he gets sacked for loss of 15 yards?
Tebow, Tebow, Tebow.
Ravens will be in the playoffs. I guarantee. So fucking eat it. Just like Peyton and the rest of you dumbasses last season.
@concretejimmy Do they call you concretejimmy cause you're a "blockhead"? Dude, the Raven's got lucky last year - Hail marry passes are out of desperation.... enjoy the past, you got a superbowl championship - even though the world knows DENVER BLEW IT - I'm kinda glad it happened, Flaco got a huge contract, good for him - lol - it's just he ain't worth a quarter of the money = and = by the Ravens giving him soooooo much money (that he's not worth) they don't have the money for free agents - lol lol lol..... so even though your team won all the glory, in the long run, Denver won - WHY? Ravens have all their money tied up in a so so QB.... Ravens are gonna go down hill from here fast - you know, like the Raiders did after they went to their last superbowl..... Denver won, because everyone knows Denver was the better team - they had an off game.... and this year they're pissed - and I thank the Ravens for that..... Denver not only is on a mission to get to the superbowl and win it - THEY ARE PLAYING LIGHTS OUT FOOTBALL..... I really feel Denver can go undefeated..... Seattle is the favorite to meet them in the superbowl and Seattle is good.... but.... they are not great - they almost lost last week..... Denver is SET FOR GREATNESS!!!! just be a football fan instead of a ravens fan this year and watch the greatest team in history = witness it, and be happy your team put a little spark under our ass.... Ravens make the playoffs? maybe.... but do you really want to see Denver put 8 TDs on them this time??? FACE IT, The Ravens are a marked team and they're not championship material - teams are gonna beat them up - if they make it to 500, you should not be surprised - YOU DO WATCH FOOTBALL, DON'T YOU? THEN YOU KNOW WHAT I SAY IS TRUE - SO JUST ACCEPT IT AND BET ON THE BRONCOS - YOU'LL BE GLAD YOU DID.
@concretejimmy Ravens very well may be in the playoffs. I don't recall the author saying that the Ravens WON'T be in the playoffs. He said they paid too much to Flacco, which is a completely different argument. Learn to get the point behind an article before you make a dumbass comment.
@wgs1138 First of all where is YOUR credibility when all you can say is "Tebow sucks." ? ?? AND AND What the HELL kind of offense do you think Tebow ran @ Denver Broncos? It was the spread formation / read-option / run & gun and I don't give a damn if his QB passer rating was 49% because the nature of the run & shoot is : read defense, pass,; or run, or if nothing is open,, THROW THE BALL AWAY = avoid the sack, don't lose yards.
So wgs1138: Go the Google and type in Tebow's statistics.
Go to youtube and watch this gifted athlete run and THROW.
Oh, Mark Sackchez is here --he has a word for you:
@MikeAnderson @concretejimmy As someone said below, its nice to see someone as passionate about the game as you are, but as you said, you cannot be a fan of the "GAME" (REAL FAN as a whole), for 1/2 a century nonetheless and honestly call them "the greatest team in history".
There have been far too many "great" teams in the history of the NFL to (again, I will use the word) HONESTLY call them the greatest team in NFL history.
Their run game is mediocre at best.......AT BEST. Moreno is certainly no Peterson, McCoy or Foster, or can/should be spoken in the same breath as say Barry Sanders, Jim Brown, Sweetness, Marcus Allen and yes even Terrell Davis.
Their defense is good, but I dont think it is as good this year as they were 2-3 years ago. Will it get there.....maybe? But they are certainly not the best ever and definitely not comparable to the 1990 Giants, 76 Steelers, 85 Bears, 75 Raiders and yes even the 77 Bronco's "Orange Crush"!
I will agree that Manning is AMAZING and probably the best ever, and that he has a great WR corps to throw to, but again the GREATEST....? Manning probably yes, but the WR's....probably not the GREATEST ever.
But more importantly, we are only heading into week 6, and that means there is a toooooooooooooon of football left this year. And that being said.....ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN!
Nothing wrong with being passionate, just have to be realistic as well!
@MikeAnderson @concretejimmy You know you make a valid point about the Ravens and about Denver, but IT"S ONLY WEEK 4. Should we just give Denver the Championship and not play the rest of the season.I think it's great that you are so passionate for your team, but as they say on ESPN's pre game show."C'mon Man'!!
@bluesman69 @MikeAnderson @concretejimmy I've watched football for nearly a half a century - ....I seen Elway come into the Draft and end up in Denver and Watched him play.... out of his whole career, I'd be surprised if I missed 5 games... and even after knowing his greatness, I followed Manning and chose him as my Fantasy Football QB EVERY YEAR for this past decade.... He has really picked it up a FEW NOTCHES this year - so forgive if I believe they're gonna go undefeated (if they stay healthy) but WHO IS GONNA BEAT EM??? This Broncos team is the top Offense, Defense and special teams - and let's not forget about the Coaches.... how bout that Owner Pat Bowlen??? C'mon man - DENVER RULES THIS YEAR.
