It was probably only a matter of time before a backwards, homophobic bigot showed us just how out of touch certain segments of America are by turning Michael Sam's admirable coming-out story into an ugly political issue.
We swear this isn't satire.
Washington lobbyist Jack Burkman on Monday said he is preparing legislation that would ban gay athletes from joining the National Football League (NFL).
Burkman in a statement said he has garnered political support for the bill, though his statement didn’t mention any specific lawmakers who are behind it.
And this is an actual quote, as far as we can tell:
”We are losing our decency as a nation,” Burkman said in a statement. "Imagine your son being forced to shower with a gay man. That’s a horrifying prospect for every mom in the country. What in the world has this nation come to?”
Horrifying? If indeed 2-10 percent of the American population is openly gay, it's pretty much a guarantee that all of those sons have already showered with gay men. What's most laughable is the implied notion that gay athletes would inevitably be physically attracted to the sons in question.
Even if this bill were lawful -- which I can't imagine it is -- it's hard to imagine more than a few extremely despicable, prehistoric lawmakers would publicly support it. Based on current trends, that would have to be considered career suicide.
It's so ridiculous that you have to wonder if it's a publicity stunt. Even if that's the case, taking a human being like Sam and using his sexual orientation for political or financial gain is as low as it gets.
This country has a long way to go, but at least Sam is causing us to realize who's on the right path while weeding out those who history will soon display in a light similar to the way we now view white supremacists from half a century ago.
LOL I have to seriously laugh at myself and eat some crow, Mr. Brad Gagnon, I have misread and misquoted your article title...which should be "Not an Onion Article"...meaning "this isn't fake journalism"...whereas I read it to say this was not an opinion article...which it clearly was... shame on me for missing that in the first place. Keep up the great work writing opinionated (not onionated) articles.
Let the condemning comments continue, at least now I deserve it.
mr. burkman probably mistakenly assumes that if he were the one in that locker room, that a gay players would automatically be pursuing him. no mr. b, no upstanding (gay) person would want to go anywhere near a creep like you! anyone (straight or gay, man or woman), anywhere would/should have better taste/sense than to be attracted to the ignorant, ugly person you are! no need to worry about your confused sexuality being infringed upon!
Maybe Jack B is a Closet Gay and does not want to admit it cause he failed at Football. Open up Jack and come on out of your closet. You will get more Lovin if you do.
There's no need to throw your sexuality out there for the world to see, dude made himself a target. No one needs to know that you're gay/straight/bisexual. That's your own personal business, I don't understand why people like to throw their private lives out for the world to see, it's idiotic and it's no one else's business. Keep it to yourself and go on about your business like everybody else. People are such idiots these days. You get paid to play football, not talk about what goes on in your bedroom and make yourself a showcase to the rest of the world cause you want attention.
I fully support the notion of freedom of speech as long as it is not used to be mean and illegally discriminate against people. This coming from a supposed intelligent lawmaker makes one wonder that democracy in the USA is running a muck and idiots are now being elected to craft laws. All those that support this bill should be sanctioned and kicked out of office.
@pdicaprioFP911 I vote libertarian and I live overseas, but this joker has to be fringe, right?
@TylerTjelmeland not a small feat, either!
This wouldn't be an issue if the young man had kept his sexual preferences to himself. It's no one's business but he and the person he has a relationship with. That being said, when you publicly push that your sexual preference be acceptable to everyone else on the team, or the NFL you're not playing football, you're garnering attention to yourself. So in 20 years will we have to accept players who like to have sex with young boys or girls?? No wait we have laws on the books already for that problem. But in 20 years will it be a problem or will we have to accept that as well because 5-20% of the men do that already?
I don't want to watch the NFL to see who's sleeping with who, or to see Pam Oliver or another stupid female interviewer who wants to push that boundary in the locker room (it's called common decency), I want to watch football.
And it is an opinion article when you are labeling anyone against homosexual players as backwards because you are for something they are openly against. Gagnon needs to go back to journalism school and figure out how to write the news rather than shoving in his views and saying it's not an opinion article. And if we're weeding out what will equate to the "white supremacists" of years gone by then should we start bringing back the coaches we caught molesting kids and let them coach based on freedom from persecution for everyone? I mean Sam is openly homosexual (gay is simply a term everyone missuses to describe it), that's his sexual preference, so why shouldn't everyone's sexual preferences be accepted? As long as Little Timmy's coach isn't actually molesting the boys, why can't we all just get along and let them enjoy the shower together?
Yeah, we all draw the line somewhere, but when the line is drawn before where we want it, we're quick to complain how backwards or bigoted someone is yet we wouldn't want people pushing their sexual preferences on us at work, or in church, or upon our children at school, but we're supposed to have to listen to it like it's the greatest news story since Clinton deflowered Lewinsky in the Oval Office.
Any lawmaker who signs this guys bill should be fired and deported immediately. This is a serious misuse of taxpayer money and anyone who is reading this should move to have him fired along with any government official who signs his bill.
What a douche. The players don't run around the locker room with a hard-on waiting for some one to bend over. They have played beside other strait and gay players all the time. They just want to play whatever sport they choose. They don't get in a corner and have orgies after the game!! Wake up, it's 2014 AD not 2014 BC which by the way they had gays back then too.
@bmerbob No the people with the money write and have the laws passed.
It is no longer a government of the people, by the people and for the people!
@ChrisPrice1 Far as I can tell, this guy is neither intelligent nor a lawmaker.
@CkHartline Be careful where you bend down, you just never know what could happen. NOW, if you think this statement is insensitive and ridiculous, you are right but it does tend to speak to how folks like CkHartline think. I can hear the banjos already.
@CkHartline - I thought yours a well stated opinion. Whether I agree or disagree is not the point. Its your opinion and you have every right to state it.
@CkHartline The thing you're really mad about here is progress, and it might be too much for your repressed mind to handle (because comparing gay people being gay to PEOPLE being pedofiles--they're not all Catholic priests, girls and boys are abused alike)--that's a frightening comparison for your mind to make, and just as messed up for people abused as it is to gays).
....but what you're REALLY mad about here is that you know KNOW you've lost. Society is beginning to realize that just because you hide your intolerance behind a book you read on sundays doesn't make it okay to live in a world where some gay football player feels like he has to lie to scouts WHO ASK ALL THE PLAYERS, "DO YOU HAVE A GIRLFRIEND?" IN THEIR COMBINE INTERVIEWS...you're mad that you're at that hilarious stage in your where guys you like subconsciously realize that you've failed to evolve, and that you're doomed to spend the rest of your life thinking about the good old days where those people you didn't like just shut up and let society think what you think about how bad they are.
Bad news, buddy, the rest of your life you're gonna be making jokes about Glee or that lesbian actress while less and less people think it's okay.
Anyways just a thought, but you seem like a great guy so just some advice one Christian to another: If you can't handle homosexuality then you should do your good, very tolerant (you're a lot like Jesus) Christian mind a favor and probably just stay in your house for the rest of your life. A gay person might look at a handsome catch of a man like you and just rape you on the street. I read in "The year 1952" magazine that they DO that sometimes, those monsters. So yeah, stay indoors. Just don't watch any movies, news, or sports, and don't read anything either--it turns out they're EVERYWHERE CORRUPTING THE AMERICA YOU CLAIM TO LOVE SO MUCH WITH YOUR BUDDIES FROM CHURCH! AHHHHHH!!! THEY JUST SHOWED UP AT MY HOUSE, AND THEY'RE FORCING ME TO DRESS BETTER AND BE SNARKIER AND TO FINALLY RELAX ON THE CARBS AND EAT HEALTHIER. S.O.S. HELP ME CK! SEND A REASONABLE PRESIDENT TO HELP ME LIKE ONE OF THOSE BUSH GUYS WHO KILLED THOSE HUNDRED THOUSAND INNOCENT MUSLIM PEOPLE FOR NO GOOD REASON. HELPPPPP MEEEEEEEEEEE.
@CkHartline Lets make sure all of those straight players shut up about their sexual preferences too. You're write well enough to know better than to peddle that trash--comparing gay people to pedofiles? That's disgusting. And I'm sure you're disgusted by homosexuality to even compare the two, but that's a pretty sickening thing to say about people that are human beings exactly like you, (although maybe a little less repressed?) Anyways that's about as bad as it is to people who have been sexually abused as it is to gay people.
If you can't handle homosexuality then you should do your good, very tolerant (you're a lot like Jesus) Christian mind a favor and probably just stay in your house for the rest of your life. A gay person might look at a handsome catch of a man like you and just rape you on the street. I read in "The year 1952" magazine that they DO that sometimes, those monsters. So yeah, stay indoors. @CkHartline If there wasn't discrimination against the gays, being gay wouldn't be an issue.
Feel free to whine your grievances at your next klan meeting.
Hitler would have agreed with everything you're saying, so congratulations on being in such choice company.
@StanChung But consider the positive of having the bill actually sponsored and brought to the house. It will draw out the Hitler wanna-Be's.
@BillMaltby You are correct. They did have gays "back then" and a lot of them lived in Sodom and Gomorrah. What happened to them? Same God now?
@ChrisPrice1 @CkHartline I'm not worried about homosexuals or pedophiles or necrophiiacs or any other sexual preference person in the manner which you describe as possibly being taken as insensitive and ridiculous. And for those who sit and say there is no comparison, there most certainly is...these are all sexual preferences by different individuals. And what I think; is that each individual is welcome to his/her opinion, but as a society some things don't need to be pushed to be accepted more-so than others. As I said in the beginning of my original post, Sam's preference is between him and the person he has a personal intimate relationship with. Likewise I also argued that times are changing and continue to change, obviously I hit a nerve about accepting or rather being forced to accept pedophilia as an acceptable sexual preference 20 years from now.
The whole issue here about what is or isn't accepted on a personal basis is being pushed into the public venue which is or will be Sam's job. His job is to play football, not espouse how important it is for everyone to accept him because he's a homosexual. So if you think I was against homosexuality or anything else you need to re-read my original post. I simply was pointing out that what was not accepted years ago is accepted today so what we don't accept today may as well be accepted...perhaps I was too far ahead of my time for most of the negative responses I got. I stated however a person felt about something, it shouldn't be pushed off on others, nor would others want things pushed off on them. Aside from the author who I felt actually wrote an opinion article based on the negative personal slant he portrayed of Burkman rather than just stating it from a newsworthy point of view, I have not said anything about anyone including Sam except that he didn't need to push this "acceptance rhetoric" in order to just play football . Which circles back to the original point, this wouldn't be an issue if Sam kept things to himself. It's already been pointed out in the news that the entire team at Mizzou knew about Sam's "preference" and it was never a newsworthy issue during the season. Nor should it have ever been.
Are we all going to start posting our sexual preferences in our comments and be upset when the first person says, "you suck" in so many words? Nope, and it's rather humorous how many of the responses to my post seemed to think they could tell me who I am when I said nothing personal but simply wrote from a societal viewpoint. I used pedophilia simply because it is something our society currently abhors as was homosexuality not that long ago, but how long before it too is simply just another acceptable sexual preference? Or necrophilia, or beastiality, or anything else men or women choose to do with their sexual appendages. My only stance has been that football shouldn't be center stage for everyone's sex lives so in that regard @BUCKETHEAD35 is on the right track, I don't want to hear about anybody else's love child or girlfriend or boyfriend or whatever...I'd really just like to enjoy the game. Good luck to Mr. Sam whoever he ends up playing for. If he can settle in and play to his talents, someone will get a great defensive player.
@SteveNelson2 @CkHartline well you did give me a smile sir, since I don't run around in white sheets and my skin color has nothing to do with pushing sexual preference for acceptance. Hitler would have rolled over in his grave since i'm the only caucasion in my household. (I think that still means white person, but just so you have it in a easy to understand vernacular) Whatever your opinion, mine is simply that this wouldn't be an issue if Mr. Sam wasn't pushing for public acceptance of a sexual preference and instead just playing football.
Furthermore I'll risk the "assume equations" and point out that what hasn't been accepted 50 years ago is acceptable today, so why not accept "every" sexual preference so we can move on and put it all behind us as a society, or were you simply already offended because I put homosexual and pedophile in the same sentence? paragraph? I believe at some point the Romans were getting down with just about anything sexual including children and pets, are we much further behind them in our history? Will you be offended when pedophilia or necrophilia or bestiality have their own version of the "Rainbow Curriculum" in your child or grandchild's school? Will you be uncomfortable when you have to listen to the first openly beast loving player come forward saying, "I'm a good player, but I like sleeping with my animals at home. I just want people to accept me for who I am" ? Do you even like football?
I'm a Chiefs fan myself. Hopefully no Native Americans are offended because I know they are pretty upset about the name "Redskins".
Maybe you're a personal friend of the author and didn't appreciate the fact I said he needed a lesson in journalism...if I've offended your sense of self esteem I humbly and sincerely apologize. I'm not even against "your" sexual preference, I just don't want to hear about it.
However you look at the issue, my point is that we should be enjoying football, not all the reality TV "Keeping up with the preferences" reports being attached to the game.
Feel free to reply
@SteveNelson2 what a loving representative response from the gay community. I suppose some people fight bigotry with bigotry,or just resort to second grade backlashes of emotion. If your projectile name-calling hatred suppose the representation of an otherwise community of "pride" and "support" then u may very well lose some of "you own." He has an opinion, you have an opinion and neither of them support a cause for seeing one side more favorable than the other. Although, one is more intelligible... and yours, sir, is NOT the one!
@CkHartline I thought about this today.
You extended yourself as adult on this post and I didnt respond in like kind. Frankly, that's bothering me.
I should handled that better, my apologies.
@SteveNelson2 is there anything else you wanted to discuss before I cut this off for the night?
@SteveNelson2 I'll be waiting for the email or the call or whatever it is you think you have cooked up.
@CkHartline I got what I needed. You were a bigger help than you think.
@SteveNelson2 what's to implicate? I haven't edited my posts or retracted anything, nor have I made any threats physical or civil at you. So do your best, I've yet to be intimidated by anything you have to say.
@CkHartline The implication is all I needed. Thanks for taking that bait.
I guess you had to rethink that one while you were considering "liability", but I wouldn't expect anything less. I have no doubt you learned to shoot proficiently as a child in Montana, Steve, but at least have the gumption to stand by what you say otherwise it makes you look unsure of yourself.
back to you Steve
@CkHartline Do it CkHartline. The liability will be long lived.
@johnboypurdue he's a 51 year old loser from Roseville, CA, I can supply the address and phone, but personally he's not worth anyone's time. He wants to act like the cool bad boy every woman wants, but after treating them like a dictator's whore, they move on (which doesn't say much for his father's discipline or Steve's upbringing). His world is his own, and if you disagree with anything he has to say he'll call you every name in the book to try to cower you into a corner of submission thinking you're supposed to apologize for existing. He's got a kid named Jesse who from all appearances is trying to make something of himself (no doubt he gets that from his mother Margaret). He's got a sister named Laura who thinks he's the cat's meow driving around in his little putt putt sports cars. I'm already prepared for the blowhard fury to follow. But really, let him have the last word thinking he himself has anything intelligent to say.
At this point the only people following this story are just being entertained by the banter of trying to reason with the unreasonable.
@johnboypurdue lol! You understand? I understand your mother was a whore. Nothing new about that, is there.
@johnboypurdueYou 'understand' nothing beyond that your mother was a whore. Dont like it? dont read it.
You know Steve, you've been raggin' my ass since I responded to this post. If I'm not Hitler, I'm a klansman or a zoophiliac. And for what? because I said it shouldn't have been news in the first place. And if you're going down the road that says a sexual preference should be socially accepted for everyone, then everyone's sexual preference will be fair game. I simply said it should have been a private matter. I've yet to hear you espouse anything but justification for name calling.
Admittedly, I misread the title of the article which was what gave me issue in the first place, I read "onion" as "opinion"...which totally changed my perspective of Gagnon's piece. And I still maintain that Sam didn't need to make his announcement to the nation in order to play good football in the League, we have Federal Laws designed to prevent any bias on sexual orientation. I commented because I think few people look at the big picture. You seem to have it in your head I'm some sort of bigoted idiot against homosexuality, but in reality you have no clue who I really am.
Your kid will eventually come from West Point and lead men on the ground, while my kid who just finished tours in Iraq and Afghanistan respectively will be doing his damnedest to continue protecting them overhead. I'm proud as hell of both young men for that. Thank God we live in America where we can sit on our ass half way across this great nation and debate who we "think" the other person is or even "where" they're really at socially. Have a good one Mr. Nelson
@bmerbob @CkHartline @ChrisPrice1 @BUCKETHEAD35 The premise of the article was that Burkman is "backward" and "bigoted" because he's taking us back to the days of the "white supremacists"...my point is that what wasn't accepted then is accepted now but has no place in the public venue of the Nation Football League.as being important to the game.
My other point is that what isn't acceptable today may very well be acceptable in the future, how are we to deal with it then? Meaning, no one wants to hear about everyone's sexual preferences publicly. I have not made fun of nor have I called anyone names or insinuated they are any less human than Mr. Sam or Mr. Burkman,
I'm not a homosexual, I'm not a pedophile, a necrophiliac, nor much to Mr Nelson's chagrin I'm sure, someone who prefers the intimacy of animals, but these are all specific sexual preferences. I would agree consent is a HUGE difference, but it is a difference mandated by law. Years ago anyone under the age of 18 was considered a minor, that age has dropped to 16 and even lower in some states...(this regarding consent)...we now try children as young as 12 and up for murder with adult consequences. My point is, if any one of us doesn't agree with something and considers anyone not jumping on the "acceptance" bandwagon as "backwards" and "bigoted"...they had better be prepared to accept the whole pill when what they don't like becomes accepted...and those things can be as extreme as pedophilia, necrophilia, and bestiality, Take a look at the history of Rome as a good example, and this is in light of whether or not we agree with any or all of it.
I'm not opposed to Mr. Sam being a confident homosexual, I'm opposed to it being newsworthy regarding whether or not he can play football to the best of his ability. I'm opposed to a journalist declaring a piece "Not an Opinion Article" and then throwing in an opinion rather than simply reporting the news which I agree with Mr. Chung would be a misuse of taxpayer money considering we already state as a country you shouldn't be prevented from working based on age, sex, race, religious belief or sexual orientation...this shouldn't be news except that Mr. Sam made an issue of making it a national announcement. And as such has brought others such as Mr. Burkman to the forefront to contend with his own views. Furthermore, if Burkman is backward for not accepting someone else's sexual preference, then how long before everyone's sexual preference will eventually need to be accepted so that we aren't all backwards bigots?
@CkHartline What CkHartline is trying to say is that by society allowing gay people to have the same rights as human beings as those of us who are straight, it somehow gives him the permission he needs to have sex with his dog.
@CkHartline If sexual preference wasnt an issue for you, you would have had nothing to respond to. Your own bias is the problem and you're too stupid to realize it.
Nice to see that you try to mask your need to fuck animals behind the issue though, Hitler.
@johnq4ward lol. I dont happen to be gay, Einstein, just tired of the excuses from the bigots. I could care less if you approve. Go back to taking communion where you get on your knees and put jesus in your mouth like a good girl.
