The NFL's top 10 teams following the draft

Written by Brad Gagnon on .

Right after the Super Bowl, we gave you our view of the top 10 teams in the league and juxtaposed those thoughts with the Las Vegas odds that had already been released for next year's Super Bowl. Now, we have a chance to update our rankings with free agency and the draft complete, and it just so happens that the sharks in Vegas have some fresh odds as well.

Here's a look at the 10 teams that should be considered the best in the league right now:

1. Denver Broncos (Vegas odds: 15-to-2, 2nd in NFL): Wasn't thrilled with what they did in the draft, but even with the Elvis Dumervil debacle the Broncos got much better this offseason. That's scary. Their odds increased slightly from 8-to-1.

2. San Francisco 49ers (6-to-1, 1st): Add Anquan Boldin to that team, as well as a ton of draft picks for depth, and this is what you get. Their odds increased from 7-to-1.

3. New England Patriots (8-to-1, 3rd): I don't think going from Wes Welker to Danny Amendola hurts, but it definitely doesn't feel like they got better. Their odds dropped from 6-to-1.

4. Seattle Seahawks (9-to-1, 4th): Love the addition of Michael Bennett, Cliff Avril and Antoine Winfield to the defense. Plus, Percy Harvin. Their odds shot up from 12-to-1.

5. Green Bay Packers (12-to-1, 5th): Green Bay jumps ahead of Baltimore after the Ravens were crushed by free agency. But the odds actually dropped from 10-to-1.

6. Cincinnati Bengals (35-to-1, 16th): Cincy had a real nice draft and held it down in free agency. Really feeling these guys. Strangely, their odds dropped from 30-to-1.

7. Atlanta Falcons (12-to-1, 5th): Vegas thinks Atlanta's chances are the same as Green Bay's. After the Falcons had a tough go in free agency, I don't buy that. Their odds increased from 16-to-1.

8. Chicago Bears (20-to-1, 11th): When healthy, the Bears are one of the best teams in this league. They had a good run in free agency and a solid draft. Their odds increased substantially from 30-to-1.

9. Houston Texans (18-to-1, 7th): Love the defense, but something about Houston just doesn't do it for me. Maybe DeAndre Hopkins will change things. Their odds dropped from 10-to-1.

10. Washington Redskins (28-to-1, 13th): They edge out their division rivals because they survived free agency and had a nice draft and Robert Griffin III is on the right track thus far. Their odds increased from 30-to-1.

The rest of the odds (via Rich Tandler):

New Orleans Saints 18/1

Baltimore Ravens 20/1

New York Giants 20/1

Pittsburgh Steelers 25/1

Dallas Cowboys 28/1

Philadelphia Eagles 30/1

Indianapolis Colts 35/1

Detroit Lions 40/1

Miami Dolphins 40/1

Minnesota Vikings 40/1

San Diego Chargers 40/1

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 40/1

Carolina Panthers 50/1

Kansas City Chiefs 50/1

St. Louis Rams 60/1

Cleveland Browns 75/1

New York Jets 75/1

Arizona Cardinals 100/1

Buffalo Bills 100/1

Oakland Raiders 100/1

Tennessee Titans 100/1

Jacksonville Jaguars 200/1

Five teams on the hot seat in 2013

Written by Shane Clemons on .

Now that the draft is in our rearview mirrors, we can start looking forward to training camp, preseason games, and finally, real football. There are a number of teams in full-blown rebuild mode, but there exists another tier of team that is trying to hang on and get into the playoffs. These are the teams that are on the brink of a complete overhaul.

5) San Diego Chargers

Sure, the Chargers now have a new front office and a new coaching staff, but the roster still resembles the old Chargers that were chronically guilty of underachieving. After this season's debacle, and yes, that's a prediction, that new front office may begin rebuilding the team from the ground up.

4) Carolina Panthers

The Carolina Panthers moved on from the John Fox era by drafting Cam Newton and hiring Ron Rivera. In there first season together, there was some great promise, but last year saw the Panthers showing little progression, and Cam Newton's production leveled off. If the Panthers don't begin showing that they're headed in the right direction this season, look for a change in the coaching staff after 2013.

3) Tennessee Titans

Last season was rough for the Titans and their fans. Mike Munchak's second season as the Titans' top man fell flat, and quarterback-of-the-future Jake Locker looked overwhelmed by the speed of the NFL most of the time. The Titans managed just six wins in a relatively weak division. With little reason for optimism, it's not a stretch to believe that the Titans will be considering their options at quarterback and head coach after the 2013 season.

2) New York Jets

Be honest, we all knew the Jets would be high on this list. When a team "blows it up," the rebuild process should commence. The problem is that the Jets only blew up the front office, leaving Rex Ryan and Co. in tact. The Jaguars tried in inverse of that when they hired Mike Mularkey without getting a new front office, and that worked out really well. The Jets still don't know how to handle adversity. The positive point here is that their biggest distraction, Tim Tebow, is now gone, but the Jets have proven time and time again that they can create their own distractions if they get board.

1) Dallas Cowboys

Jerry Jones. That name has become synonymous with "narcissist" over the past decade. While Jason Garrett probably isn't the right coach for the job in Dallas, Jerry Jones certainly isn't the right man to be making personnel decisions. Following yet another seemingly poor draft haul, the Cowboys seem set for another disappointing finish. 8-8 won't be enough for Garrett to keep his job in 2013, but something tells me 8-8 is the Cowboys' best case scenario. Look for Jones to be on the hunt for a new coach once again after the end of the season.

Jets never considered changing Tebow's position

Written by Shane Clemons on .

Since the Jets released Tim Tebow yesterday, there's been some talk around the NFL community that another team may be willing to pick up Tebow if he's willing to play a different position such as fullback or tight end. Now, it seems, the Jets never considered changing his position, viewing him as a quarterback to till the end.

On "Mike and Mike in the Morning," Jets general manager John Idzik was asked if the Jets had been considering moving Tebow to a different position. His response was rather surprising.

"No, we didn’t. Tim, while I was here, he was slated as a quarterback."

And that's it. Two short sentences explaining the Jets' logic, or lack thereof, in the release of Tim Tebow. He wasn't given an opportunity to compete, he wasn't given an opportunity to change positions, and ultimately, he wasn't given an opportunity to play with the Jets.

Now to be fair, the Jets surely had great plans for Tebow, but they never panned out. Les Carpenter of Yahoo Sports went so far as to accuse the Jets of sabotaging Tebow's post-New York job options. That's not why the Jets waited to release Tebow. They were able to acquire Geno Smith, eliminating a need to keep Tim Tebow. It's that simple.

With his interview on "Mike and Mike," Idzik gave us a little glimpse into the Jets' logic. You may not agree with it, but something tells me getting rid of Tebow was as much about limiting distractions moving forward as it was about releasing a quarterback that never really played much in the first place.

Jaguars still not interested in Tim Tebow

Written by Shane Clemons on .

Just prior to David Caldwell being hired as the Jaguars' general manager, it was reported by a certain four letter (E**N) that it was virtually a certainty that the Jaguars would be bringing in Tim Tebow. That rumor didn't last long after Caldwell was hired. He made it unquestionably clear that the Jaguars weren't interested.

"I can't imagine a scenario where he would be a Jacksonville Jaguar," Caldwell said at a press conference after being hired. That sentiment appears to continue, with Shahid Khan's spokesman telling USA Today's Jonny Saraceno, "The Jacksonville Jaguars’ plans do not include Tim Tebow."

To this point, the Jaguars have handled Tim Tebow rumors in the best possible manner. Instead of beating around the bush, the Jaguars have shut down all Tebow rumors since Caldwell took over as general manager. Considering that Shahid Khan and the Jaguars were very interested in Tebow when he went on the trade market last offseason, it seems that Khan is embracing his new GM's philosophy and staying away from the hometown guy.

It's still unclear whether Tebow will find a home with an NFL roster, but if he does, it seems likely he'll have to give up the quarterback position or he'll find himself in a different league altogether.

Raiders sticking with Flynn following the draft

Written by Shane Clemons on .

A year ago, the Seattle Seahawks brought in Matt Flynn to be their new starting quarterback, but a rookie by the name of Russell Wilson refused to allow Flynn to take on that role, convincing his coaches that he, not Flynn was the right man for the Seahawks starting job.

Now, Matt Flynn is in Oakland with a similar position. He's the presumptive starter, with Terrelle Pryor and Tyler Wilson competing to gain ground in the race for the top spot on the depth chart.

"We’re going to begin with Matt Flynn," GM Reggie McKenzie said prior the draft. "Now, the quarterbacks who will be on the roster from that point on, they will all compete. Like I said, every position, it’s all about getting players that can play and competing."

After drafting Tyler Wilson, McKenzie was asked if Wilson's selection changed anything. "He’s a rookie. I want him to learn the playbook first. Get out here and make sure he gets behind the center, not behind the guard. You want these guys to come in and just show the coaches and their team, number one, that they belong. Then all the other stuff will come."

Now the question becomes, will the Raiders pick up just-released quarterback Tim Tebow. No - I'm just kidding.

In all seriousness, it appears that Matt Flynn will once again head into training camp as the favorite to lock down the starting spot. Still, he's been beaten out for the top spot by a rookie before, and it's possible, however unlikely, that such a thing could happen in Oakland. Still, I get the feeling that the Raiders aren't planning an open quarterback competition the way it will be in some other places around the league. Matt Flynn will be the starter in Oakland week 1 unless another quarterback on roster makes it impossible to pick Flynn over that QB.

Tim Tebow is first casualty of Geno Smith to Jets

Written by Anthony Brown on .

So it begins.

ESPN and other media outlets report that the New York Jets released little-used quarterback Tim Tebow this morning, leaving the team with five quarterbacks on the roster.

New York's little brother team might have cut less heralded Greg McElroy, Matt Simms, or, um. Mark Sanchez. Instead they excised the most useless outsider in NFL history.

None of it was Tebow's fault.

Ex-Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum took the fall for the decision, though I never believed it was his idea to bring Tebow in. The Jets blew us smoke about using Tebow in a Wildcat package that they rarely used and fooled no one. Opposing teams defensed Tebow's running and reacted to his passing.

Whispers from the Jets camp had it that Tebow's presence was intended to light a fire under Sanchez who supposedly was shaken by the Jets' play for Peyton Manning. The team extended Sanchez' contract for three years to show confidence in him, but then traded for Tebow, himself a casualty of Denver's move to land Manning.

To show faith in Sanchez – while lighting a fire under him, the Jets manufactured a storyline about the Tebow Wildcat. The football world laughed and labeled the Jets a clown car before the season began. The season ended with the quarterback situation a J-E-T-S MESS MESS MESS.

New York took a step at resolution by selecting West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith in the second round of the NFL Draft. Smith was the top prospect in the not so stellar quarterback class of 2013. At least he is a bargain under the rookie pay scale compared to first-rounders Sanchez and Tebow.

The Jets take a $12.5 million cap hit if they release Sanchez. The Jets wasted a fourth round pick in the trade for Tebow who cost them $1.5 million salary plus a payment of $2.5 million to the Broncos as part of the trade agreement.

With Tebow gone, the Jets can get to a proper quarterback competition with veteran David Garrard and Smith vying with Sanchez for the starter slot. Fans will watch to see who gets the first team reps during OTAs and training camp. The rest of us will just try not to laugh.

Bills' drafting E.J. Manuel lacked sound strategy

Written by Shane Clemons on .

Since being promoted to the position of general manager, Buddy Nix's teams have gone 4-12, 6-10 and finally, 6-10. That's a crappy record that no general manager can actually defend. Why does he still have a job in the NFL? The worst part is 6-10 seems to be the high water mark for the Bills again this year.

Yesterday I wrote that the Browns had essentially given up on their 2013 season, and that's still true. The difference is that the Browns are planning for next season. The Bills just don't seem to get out of their own way.

With the sixteenth pick of the draft, the Bills selected E.J. Manuel. They got the guy they wanted. The problem was that they drafted him at least two rounds too early, and they sacrificed the opportunity to draft a more valuable player with their pick.

I preach, and will continue to preach, that to succeed, every team needs a solid quarterback. That's a premise the Bills seem to be embracing, but they seem to lack the draft savvy to actually obtain a quarterback for a good value.

Now, E.J. Manuel may turn into a great quarterback, and the move to draft him so early in the draft may prove to be the best pick of 2013. The problem is that, considering the Bills' recent problems finding a competent quarterback, Buffalo isn't a place that Manuel is likely to flourish.

For some perspective, the Bills have finished dead last in their division five seasons in a row. The last time the Bills had a winning season was 2004, and the team last made the postseason in 1999, nearly 15 years ago. That's not a place for someone that is "raw talent." That's a place for a pro-ready quarterback that simply can't fail, a prospect like Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III.

The Browns have essentially forfeited the 2013 season

Written by Shane Clemons on .

Usually we have to wait until late September to officially declare the Cleveland Browns dead in the water, but this year, I think it's safe to make that declaration following the first five rounds of the draft.

Despite a completely overhauled and new regime, the same problems the Browns have faced in recent memory will persist. There's still questions at quarterback, there's still a lack of playmakers, and there still seems to be a lack of decisive action, at least in this draft.

New general manager Michael Lombardi has opted to sell off some of this season's picks to acquire higher picks in next year's draft. For instance, the Browns got out of the 111th pick of the draft (14th in the 4th round) by trading the pick to acquire Pittsburgh's 2014 3rd round pick. It's a move that helps the Browns down the road, but it limits what they can do this season.

Ultimately, the trades will probably benefit the Browns down the road, and they may benefit greatly down the road, but the trades can be seen as the Browns coming to the realization that there's just too much they have on their plate for one offseason. Combine that with an overall poor draft class, and you have a front office willing to wait until next year to make its big moves.

There should be hope in Cleveland. A new regime is a new birth for a team that's had more than its fair share of turmoil, but it's going to be at least another season until the Browns can think about being a competitive football team.

2013 NFL Draft: winners and losers of day two of the NFL draft

Written by Eric Galko on .

In a Day Two that only saw two more quarterbacks get drafted and the value of defensive lineman and linebackers sky-rocket, the 2nd day seemed to be just as interesting and still confusing as the 1st.

The 49ers made out like bandits, the Cowboys struggled mightily, the Jets got a franchise quarterback, the Dolphins got help at key spots, and the Broncos went with short term fits on Day two.

Winners
San Francisco 49ers
DE Tank Carradine, TE Vance McDonald, OLB Corey Lemonier
The 49ers had the unique luxury this year of not needing more than 1-2 starters, having few needs to fill in general, and having far too many picks for a team that just played in the Super Bowl. That allowed them to be aggressive on Day One, and further that aggressiveness on Day Two. They moved up for first round talent Tank Carradine, who will be groomed to take over for Justin Smith in the future.

They selected Delanie Walker’s replacement in Vance McDonald, a tight end that was coveted by many teams. And then they stole the most NFL-ready outside pass rusher in this draft (after Jarvis Jones) at pick #88 in Corey Lemonier. The 49ers have added three potential 2013 starters on defense with Reid in the first round and Carradine/Lemonier here.

New York Jets
QB Geno Smith, OG Brian Winters
After a day one that had Jets fans confused whether to cheer or boo, the second day seemed to solidify what their plan was all along. After getting Revis’s replacement (Dee Milliner) and going  best player available (Sheldon Richardson) in the first round, they decided to go offesnse in round two. After considering Geno Smith at pick #13, the Jets stole the best player in the draft at #39 overall. He should leave training camp as the team’s starting quarterback.

Getting a franchise quarterback on day two should be good enough, but the Jets also got a mauling, physical interior lineman in Brian Winters, who can step in day one as a right guard and provide the nastiness this run game needs.

Miami Dolphins
CB Jamar Taylor, OT Dallas Thomas, CB Will Davis
The Dolphins traded up from 12 to 3rd overall on Day One to secure Dion Jordan, a unique defensive end who can give this defense added versatility. On day two, the Dolphins positioned themselves to fill their two biggest holes on their roster after getting value in the first round. Jamar Taylor of Boise State was considered by teams in the first round, but slipped to 54th overall, giving the Dolphins an instant starter opposite one year-signing Brent Grimes.

In the 3rd round, the Dolphins got an NFL ready right guard or tackle (depending on how he does in camp) in Dallas Thomas. And the traded up into the 3rd round again to secure the high upside yet still raw Will Davis, who will likely be groomed for a season, then planned on to replace Brent Grimes.

Losers
Dallas Cowboys
TE Gavin Escobar, WR Terrence Williams, S JJ Wilcox
For  team with major needs on the offense line (even after the Travis Frederick pick) and at defensive tackle/safety, the team decided to go offensive skill position with their first two picks on day two. Escobar is an NFL ready ball snatcher, but he doesn’t have defined routes to get separation consistent against NFL zones. He should be a very solid#2 tight end. As for Williams, he’s a vertically only guy, which, if he pans out, should push Miles Austin on the inside full time to the slot.

They finally went defense in round three, but they took the high upside, low experience JJ Wilcox from Georgia Southern. Wilcox was a running back his first three years in college, and made the move to safety just this year. I’m not sure the Cowboys have the luxury of taking a chance on Wilcox.

Denver Broncos
RB Montee Ball, CB Kayvon Webster
The Broncos needed a starter-ready running back, and they went with the Wisconsin product in Montee Ball. His 924 career carries are a concern, but this pick didn’t really bother too much. They shouldn’t expect him to hold up as a starter for more than 4-5 years however, so he’s a quick fix to play out Peyton Manning’s last two years.

I personally felt Webster was a reach in the late third round, as he’s a short area cornerback only who struggles to get vertical. While the Broncos obviously feel differently and feel he may become a starter he was one of the worst values of Day Two for us.

Jets draft Geno Smith in second round. Queue the overreaction

Written by Anthony Brown on .

My Twitter timeline exploded in laughter as soon as the New York Jets selected West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith. It wasn't because of Geno.

Quarterback confusion is the distinguishing hallmark of the Jets. Five are already on the roster. New York extended Mark Sanchez' contract last season to show their faith and confidence in him. Well that did not work so well. Now they are on the hook for $8 million to Sanchez whether he stays with the team or not. He is too expensive to trade or release, but he is competing for his football life with the outcome in doubt.

I will buy you a hamburger if you can explain why Tim Tebow is on the team. Greg McElroy did not show well in limited starts. Veteran David Garrard is on the roster. He may be the Jets' most solid prospect and a steadying influence. Garrard isn't interested in that. He wants to compete.

A roster line-up of Sanchez, Garrard and Smith, not necessarily in that order, could make sense. As we said, the Jets quarterback situation is, um, confusing.

Optimum Scouting's Eric Galko listed Smith No. 1 of the top 250 prospects remaining after round one.

"In what was a surprising development on draft day, not a single team traded up from the first round to select the quarterback who we feel is the best in this draft class. He shouldn’t last long in the 2nd round, and I’m still confident he’ll have a long NFL career."

Jets fans have tired of circus. They hope that Geno brings order out of chaos. Smith has shows a tendency to wear his heart on his sleeve. He will learn quickly that every small comment will explode in the New York media market.

Bloggers and sportswriters applaud the move. The Jets are ripe material for the rest of the year.

Once the announcement was made, the Elton John standard Benny and the Jets popped in my head and I cannot shake it. Let us close with that.
